In this case, the blurb pretty much sets the scene for us perfectly. Carter – young, out and proud – crushing on older “B” level actor and very closeted – Levi. They share many common interests including indy films and become fast friends. We see this friendship develop SLOWLY over many pages. Everything about Levi is perfect for Carter and he PINES, but alas, Levi is “straight” so…
Eventually, the 38 year old Levi admits his sexuality to Carter and they begin a relationship in secret. Carter wants more, but Levi fears the loss of his career and family, and chooses those over being open and honest with Carter.
I am a big LA Witt fan – sometimes she swings and misses. This is one of those. On the one hand I love Levi and Carter and think they’re great characters and great together. It was her pacing that made me nuts. SO MUCH TIME spent on building the friendship then POW they’re together POW they’re apart POW I Love You POW the end. The last 20% went too fast and the first 80% too slowly.
I was particularly annoyed with Levi’s resistance based on his career. He’s not even a main stream actor and this is already being billed as a gay friendly show… to me – at his age – I’d think the relationship would matter more given the inconsistency of Hollywood and the lack of guarantee that he even has a career beyond this show. But… I was very pleased with the ending. It redeemed things for me quite a bit, I just wish there’d been a bit more between building the friendship and then super-drama/resolution at the end.

Nick J Russo is just so easy to listen to! He does a great job with both male and female characters – so all the female characters in this story are really well represented. I loved his choice of voices for Eli and Carter and thought the audiobook made this story even better. He even gives the secondary characters unique voices and that really brings this story to life. I think I’d buy anything narrated by Nick – he’s a reliable source of entertainment and his voice is just DELICIOUS! He absolutely elevated my enjoyment of this story and made me rate it higher.

Ahh this brings back fond memories of why I started reading the Bluewater Bay series. This story was adorable yet had enough angst and emotion to keep it from turning cheesy. I loved Levi and Carter. Their courtship started out so sweet with blushes and nerves, and fluttering tummies. Then things turned annoying when Levi allowed outside influences to force him to hide himself and his feeling for Carter. I hated his parents and the studio and wanted to slap them all. But mostly I wanted to slap Levi for hurting Carter. I almost wanted Carter and his almost hookup to have worked out just to show Levi what was what!
But in the end, I loved the way Levi found his voice and how Carter forgave him. I do wish more of their connection would have been on page, but overall I was happy with this story. I now want to go back and re-read the entire series! Hurry up and release them all on audio so I can binge listen!!!!
Nick J. Russo’s narration really brought out the best in this story. The cuteness factors were amplified and the angst came through clearly. I felt the emotions and easily connected with his characters. Between my love for this story and the added narration, I listened to this in one sitting because I just could not make myself put this one down!
