Summary

The sequel to Jonas Jonasson’s international best seller The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared.

It all begins with a hot air balloon trip and three bottles of champagne. Allan and Julius are ready for some spectacular views, but they’re not expecting to land in the sea and be rescued by a North Korean ship, and they could never have imagined that the captain of the ship would be harbouring a suitcase full of contraband uranium on a nuclear weapons mission for Kim Jong-un....

Soon Allan and Julius are at the centre of a complex diplomatic crisis involving world figures from the Swedish foreign minister to Angela Merkel and President Trump. Things are about to get very complicated....

It Got a Little Bit Old Fairly Quickly For Me.

After a brief but entertaining foreword by the author who describes how the book came about this all started feeling old and tired to me fairly quickly. This is the follow-up to Jonasson's absolutely charming "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared " and I may have made a mistake having only read and very much enjoyed that one very recently. This has the same writing style which is open and friendly which means it does sound similar to a children's book in some ways but it suits the amiable humour.

Unfortunately this one didn't quite stack up to the earlier book. A lot of the characters that I enjoyed from that are absent and despite the similar style this has a much more restricted chemistry as a result. There are still some of the trade mark clever and farcical situations but this felt much more linear and in many ways it was a procession of varied country officials who quickly find themselves in a situation that is "out of control" upon meeting Alan. That was interspersed, of course, with meetings with world leaders which predictably didn't go as those leaders expected.

This story is a bit tougher on narrator Peter Kenny too, his oriental and Trump voices push him out of his comfort zone so while he gives a very game performance it felt a little strained and less smooth at times.

In summary it's an okay read and maybe I was foolish taking on the two books so close together and using this to accompany me all day on a day off work but the reduced character set and considerable repetition meant this was not as enjoyable as the first book.

Not a patch on the original book

Having read and enjoyed the first 100-year-old man book, I was looking forward to this one.
What a let down.
The story is weak, very contrived and much more overtly political than the original.
Save yourself the disappointment and use your credit for something else.

Sadly nowhere near as good as the first book

Too political to be entertaining, was more like listening to the news. Such a shame.

Enjoyable enough, but not as good as the first one.

(Apologies in advance for typos, fat thumbs and a small kindle)

This is in no way a bad book but it lacks the magic charm of the first one, it's definitely worth a credit and is a fun listen but it just seems to be missing the spirit of the one hundred year old man.

My theory is that this book is set in an alternative universe. This would explain how huge chunks of the ending of the first book have been ignored with some characters seeming to have vanished from existence

Also the characters who remain are noticeably different, Allan, seems grumpier and has gone from a man who saw the bright side of being locked up in by the Iranian secret police, being sent to a gulag, spending years in a detention centre, and being locked in a mental institute, to a man who complains about snoring.

This would also explain why much of the chemistry and easy going not Allan and Julius ' friendship has gone, ( and also a change to Julius ' back story).

Still it's a good listen and though a few of the voices are a bit thin the narration is overall excellent as ever.

TLDR

Crazy fan theory mixed in with a plea to give the book a chance.

Nearly gave up - not a patch on the first book

I loved the first book which I read physically. This one had some good parts but far too many long winded passages about current politics. I couldn’t be bothered to listen in places.

I also found the narration unbelievably samey. The same inflexion for almost all sentences. It was boring. The dialogue was much better (Trump aside) but the narrative was plain irritating.

The King of Sweden is a better story if you want a good follow on from the 100 year old man book.

Whimsical enjoyable adventure

If you read the first one, you know what to expect, a light hearted series of events that are highly enjoyable and difficult to predict.
This is the second book however it’s nothing new. Worth a read but if you want something as good as the first but a new story your better off reading the king of Sweden book.

Alan's back and World Leaders know it!

Brilliantly narrated this gloriously funny sequel takes us undercthe sea and across desert. Alan and his friends old(ish) and young are pursued by agents, get involved in political uproar and still find time to plan for asparagus. Trump, Merkel, Putin and Kim Jong-I. Nobody's spared in this witty satire. Happy 101st Birthday!

Too much politics

I really loved the first book. And the "The Girl who Saved the King of Sweden" was also excellent. This is a decent book with enjoyable moments, but far too much politics (to the point of going off on massive tangents irrelevant to the story) and a general undertone of bitterness that isn't present in the other books... result in this being a much weaker entry.
