Summary

The classic story of paradise found - and lost.

Richard lands in East Asia in search of an earthly utopia. In Thailand he is given a map promising an unknown island, a secluded beach - and a new way of life.

What Richard finds when he gets there is breathtaking: more extraordinary, more frightening than his wildest dreams. But how long can paradise survive here on Earth? And what lengths will Richard go to in order to save it?

Absolutely fantastic!

Such a great book! This was my first ever audiobook but has been a delight to listen to. The book is so much better than the film. It’s strange and twisted but is so gripping. The narrator’s use of different voices makes it easy to tell people apart.

A Wonderfully Dark Tale & Accomplished Narrator.

The Beach transports you to an idyllic island which quickly turns from a tranquil haven into something much more sinister. The story draws you in with an authentic Thai feel & compounds this with compelling characters & an unsettling sinister element.

Alfie Allen does an amazing job; his versatility in performing the different characters is a joy to listen to.

This is one of my favourite audio books: highly recommended!

JUST BRILLIANT

Read the book a few years ago and the audio version is even better. The narration is excellent , just how I would imagine Richard [the teller of the story] would speak. All the accents of the various characters are so well done.

Excellent narration

Great book obviously but the narration is really first rate. He really brings you into the story and onto the beach..

Incredible narration, excellent story

The narration for this book is probably the best I've encountered on Audible so far. It's easily discernible as to which character is speaking and the emotions being portrayed. Similarly, the story is excellent, spooky and slow-building, deeply reminiscent of a more modern Lord of the Flies.

Either way, I think you'll love it!

I first read the book when it was published back in the 90's when I was 23. I decided to download the audio book version and give it a listen but this time with my son.(in his 20s) It’s still brilliant and a well written and if like me you have done a bit of backpacking round Thailand in the early 90's, I'd like to think you'll enjoy this as much as me. If you haven't, I still think you'll enjoy it.
