Great stories, poorly read

I love a good ghost story, and among my favourite authors are Wilde, James & Poe. However I think this was a poor choice of narrator for such stories. Very monotone, with little inflection or suspense. I am not a anglophile, but I believe, as many of the stories are by English authors, this collection would have benefitted from a British narrator.

Skip this tittle

Great stories read too quickly with appalling accents... the British and German accents are shockingly bad. It is difficult to follow as a result. The narrator is out of his depth and ruins some classic stories.... Pity a great collection If narrated well .

So these are the best ghost stories ever told are they?

Not sure about some of the stories in this collection. That is to say, I'm not sure that if I were editing them I'd necessarily have included some of them since to my mind they aren't, strictly speaking, ghost stories. I'll give an example. 'Open Window' is more about a woman with a fanciful imatination and a talent for telling convincing lies than about a real ghost. I felt the naration was flat in places and the accents were a mite strange. However they did their best and that's a lot. I'd read it again anyway. If you're an aspiring writer of short fictuion and you'll try your hand at anything then read this one. If you're an aspiring reader of audio books read this one. it'll show you how not to do it. If you just like ghost stories then give it a listen but don't be surprised if you find some you disagree with in terms of their inclusion in this collection.

poor narration

I enjoy a good ghost story but I found the narration ruined this book for me. The narrator was flat, boring to listen to and used some strange accents. It certainly ruined any atmosphere I was hoping for.

Badger and Pot.

Great stories adequately read. There are some odd accents also.... but anything read by Badger and Pot must be at least acceptable. Even when there is a mispronunciation, it's forgiven as it is after all, Badger. Bad accent?? Blame Pot!

Appalling US Anti-Intellectualism

By 'Classic' they mean 'Anti-Semitic', 'racist' and ''animal cruelty'. Its like listening to JK Roeling's prejudice against trans people - so hideously 'out of date' is this collection. The only thing scary about any of it is the terrible attempts at cogent narration and the US racist attempts at British and German accepts - which seem to be mimicking people suffering from learning difficulties! This is not good literature just as old books are not necessarily good books. Attacking the Jewish community in Venice was the final straw for me - a non-Jew with a conscience!

Why are so many of these horribly racist?

Many of these are not ghost stories and the 'horror' consists of "natives exist".
