Summary

A foundling, an old book of dark fairy tales, a secret garden, a maze, an aristocratic family, a love denied, a mystery - The Forgotten Garden is a captivating, atmospheric, and a compulsive listen about the past, ghosts, family, and memories from best-selling author Kate Morton.

Thirty-eight year old Cassandra is lost, alone, and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident 10 years ago, feels like she has lost everything known and dear to her.

But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Inheriting a book of dark and intriguing fairytales written by Eliza Makepeace Rutherford - the Victorian authoress who disappeared mysteriously in the early twentieth century - as well as a cliff-top cottage on the other side of the world, Cassandra takes her courage in both hands to follow in the footsteps of Nell, on a quest to find out the truth about their history, their family and their past; little knowing that in the process, she will also discover a new life for herself.

Critic reviews

"This debut page-turner...recounts the crumbling of a prominent British family as seen through the eyes of one of its servants....Morton triumphs with a riveting plot, a touching but tense love story and a haunting ending." ( Publishers Weekly)

A good tale

I enjoyed listening to this story. The clever way the plot revolves around three stories keeps you wanting to listen, especially when you get left with a cliffhanger and then move backward or forward in time. The only downside was the accents - the English ones rather moved back and forth across the country and got a bit Irish at times - but the story was enough to compensate

A good story spoilt

This was a good story but Oh dear the \" Cornish \" accent was so excruciating to listen to, spoilt it for me.

magical

This book is beautifu and spellbinding and keeps you enthralled to the very end. And what a perfect ending it has!!! The way the fairy tales are intertwined throughout the main story is just magical. I've finally found something as perfect as daphne du maurier's Rebecca. I can't wait to listen to the rest of Kate's books.

What a beautifully woven tale

I absolutely loved this book, a wonderfully crafted story, I was enchanted from beginning to end. In mourning now because I’ve finished it, this is a book that really touched my soul

Fantastic story, spoilt by narration.

The story is beautiful and richly painted, but the narrator's diabolical attempts at regional English accents was so bad as to distract from the story. So bad were the accents, it would be impossible to guess where the characters were supposed to be from and I almost imagined a big grin on her face as she made fun of the characters whose voices she was attempting to read.
The story itself is magical and clever and had me ignoring family to find out what happened next.
I give the story 5 stars, but the performance 2. Caroline Lee reads well, but shouldn't be allowed anywhere near accents. I have discovered this in the past, and had I seen that she was narrating this one, I wouldn't have downloaded it. I'm glad I did, as the story is so good and I have little time to sit and read paper books.

Intriguing intertwined tale of several generations

After a few disappointing audiobooks lately I thoroughly enjoyed this intriguing tale. Well narrated, with twists, turns and likeable characters I was a little sad to get to the end.

Accents

Honestly, the West Country accents went through Irish, Newcastle, Caribbean… I’d rather the narrator didn’t do them at all because it was distracting. Good story though lol
