Summary

Three generations of Cazalets spend each summer in their family house: Home Place, Sussex. For two unforgettable summers, they are safe from the advancing storm clouds of the Second World War. These are sunlit days of childish games, lavish family meals and picnics on the beach.

Elizabeth Jane Howard has produced a gripping chronicle of an English family and the fascinating tangle of their affairs.

Cazalet Chronicles are lovely.

When I finished reading this first book I had to go on line to buy the next and the next! I was thrilled to find them in Audible. This first book sets the family and the time before the war, characters are born and by the later books they are adults. Elizabeth Jane Howard has certainly studied characters well, and she puts them across! I think these books help to show how life has changed now, then there were staff, Nannies, Cook, housekeeper, maids, chauffeurs. The lady of the house had no hard work and she had to know how to speak to her staff so the house ran smoothly. Highly recommend these chronicles.
