Summary

Secrets and haunting mysteries.... A wonderfully powerful and poignant historical novel from the author of the TV Book Club best seller The Legacy.

Bath, 1821: Rachel Crofton escapes her unhappy employment as a governess by marrying a self-made businessman. But her new life soon takes an unexpected turn. Reclusive Jonathan Alleyn is a man tormented by the disappearance of his childhood sweetheart, Alice. Starling, foundling child and now servant, is convinced that Alice, the woman she loved as a sister, was stolen from her. Did Alice run away? Or did something altogether more sinister occur?

As Starling tries to expose the lies behind Bath's immaculate facades, others want only to forget, and will go to extreme lengths to do so. And the courage both Rachel and Starling need to bring these truths to light will come at a very high price.... Read by Jacqueline King.

Exciting last couple of hours!

Slightly laboured first hours of the book. It only really got enthralling during the last few hours. If only it could have been as gripping from the start.

A gripping story

A marvellous gripping tale of three ladies all in different stations in the early 19th century. Their stories intertwined beautifully and then hurtle towards an ending that you only half guess. A must read.

Really enjoyed this book

What about Jacqueline King’s performance did you like?

Narrator used her voice well to convey emotion

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the twists and urns in the story. Sometimes I get a book that I cant wait to find out what happens but at the same time do not want the book to end. For me this was such a book

Predictable, but good on the whole.

Generally very good, and interesting, but predictable. However, guessing the story line did not prevent me from enjoying the story.

Great potential but let down by grusom details...

I loved 'The legacy' through and through, but this book was disturbing in places, left a bad taste in the mouth.
A bit hesitant to read another of her books.

Brilliant

I loved this story. I felt it was slightly slow to start but then I was hooked. Loved it. The performance was good too. Sometimes the performances grate on me but I loved this performance. Will definitely listen again.
