Summary

'Have you met them yet, the new couple?'

When Gav and Lou move into the house next door, Sara spends days plucking up courage to say hello. The neighbours are glamorous, chaotic and just a little eccentric. They make the rest of Sara's street seem dull by comparison.

When the hand of friendship is extended, Sara is delighted and flattered. Incredibly, Gav and Lou seem to see something in Sara and Neil that they admire, too.

In no time at all, the two couples are soul mates, sharing suppers, bottles of red wine and childcare, laughing and trading stories and secrets late into the night in one another's houses. And the more time Sara spends with Gav and Lou, the more she longs to make changes in her own life. But those changes will come at a price.

Soon Gav and Lou will be asking things they've no right to ask of their neighbours, with shattering consequences for all of them....

Have you met The People at Number 9? A dark and delicious novel about envy, longing and betrayal in the suburbs.

What the heck

Listening to this book became a chore. You wait for it to actually get to that point, but it doesn't, and then it ends. Very disappointing.

Odd

Didn't enjoy this book at all. I thought the story was odd and it didn't really go anywhere. I found it a bit depressing and not like the blurb.

Enjoyable characters in situations we can all relate to

This was well written and the characters so well drawn I felt I knew them. The narrator was very good and I enjoyed listening to this book as I did my chores over a few days.
However, I did want a bit more spite and bite that I felt was never delivered, and the denouement, that the main characters husband is drawn to the others wife was apparent a mile off. also the ending very weak and unfair on Neil considering sara spent most of her time lusting after the husband ! If there had been more backstabbing and evil intention played out, this would have been very good indeed, as it stands, the author bottles out and it is just merely a pleasant listen.

Awful

What would have made The People at Number 9 better?

For me? Absolutely nothing. I hate to be beaten so I persevered to the end and I shouldn't have bothered.

What will your next listen be?

Probably a Joanna Trollope or Elizabeth Jane Howard.

Which character – as performed by Jenny Funnell – was your favourite?

Gav.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The People at Number 9?

I wouldn't have published this, however, if anything I would say the ending.

Any additional comments?

I listened to this based on a recommendation by Viv Groskop in Red magazine. In future when she recommends a title I will be sure to ignore her,

Don't waste your time

In a few words, there is no story! In my opinion this at best is a short story. The characters lack any kind of depth, there are hints of a storyline (possible affair with Gav, what happened in Spain etc) but nothing comes of it. Utter waste of time!

Loved it

I really enjoyed this book both from the development of the characters and its narration. I found myself drawn into the characters, their everyday lives and the unfurling complexity of friendships

Awful

This was slow and weird at some stages. Not one likeable character in the book.
The last hour and a half is good, but the rest ruined it for me.
I feel this was the wrong narrator for the characters in this book.
The story was boring and I lost interest so many times. Not recommended at all

Disappointing

Enjoyed the first half, but failed miserably to deliver after that. Very disappointed that there d
wasn't anything unexpected in the end. A bit like the non ending in No Country for Old Men. Waste if my time.

Boring

I was still waiting for the book to show where it was going right until the end, in my opinion, total waste of time.

What does Jenny Funnell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She is an excellent narrator and brought the characters to life.
