When Astarte Weaver finds her boyfriend and best friend in her bed, she returns to County Clare in Ireland, a place that holds happy childhood memories, and buys a ruined cottage in an area that the locals call "the Swan Lake". Trying to rebuild her home - and her life - with the help of local builder Flynn, Astarte gradually becomes part of the tightly knit local community.
But when tragedy hits the small village, Astarte discovers that the only way to heal the sorrow of the present is to come to terms with the events of the past.
"Magical...really fabulous." (Joanne Harris, best-selling author of Chocolat)

Better than I thought! Good plot and characters
Surprising, poigniant, enjoyable
When Astarte moves into her new cottage, when Astarte finds ryan, Jamie and Siobhan by the lake and the aftermath that follows...
I've heard a few audiobooks that Amy has read and enjoyed them, which is why I chose this title as I love listening to Amy's accent, so was a bit disappointed by the performance of this book - some of the passages are not read correctly, the punctuation seems to be in the wrong places at times which means the sentences aren't read they way they should be which sounds like a small thing I know, but when you're listening it can be confusing and make the story not make sense. It really irritated me towards the end, but aside from this issue I liked the performance - its a shame because there's some beautiful and poigniant parts to the story and it spoiled it for me a bit. It might not bother other listeners but it bugged me. Not meaning to sound picky (sorry Amy!) it was just my own experience.,
Seize the day.
I was interested in this book initially as its set in and around Ennis, Co. Clare in Ireland where I have family and the author depicts country life and Ennis wonderfully. I was looking for a pleasant relaxing read on my commute to and from work as have been listening to a lot of thrillers and fancied a change. The story centres at first on Astarte who is looking to start a new life after discovering her partners' infidelity with her best friend, she decides to up sticks and leave her job, hippy parents and old life behond for a fresh start in Ireland. From there on in there are lots of twists and turns as she makes new friends and is persued by a new love in Flynn the local builder, and her fears at starting s new relationship. Half way through theres a twist that I wasn't expecting which turned this book from an OK to a great read, and there's some beautifully poigniant moments in it. Overall I was glad I chose this book despite the issues I've highlighted (above). And I was sad when it ended. Hope to hear more from the author soon.
