Summary

Fresh from the Battle of Hastings, William of Normandy has returned home in triumph, accompanied by the English nobles he cannot trust to be left behind.
But Waltheof of Huntingdon is not thinking of rebellion; from the moment he sees Judith, daughter of the king's formidable sister, he knows he has found his future wife. The attraction is mutual, but in mediaeval Europe marriage has little to do with love.
When William refuses to let the couple wed, Waltheof joins an uprising against him. William brutally crushes the rebellion but realises that it would be unwise to ignore Waltheof and his demands.

Compelling

Would you listen to The Winter Mantle again? Why?

I always re-read books I love many times, and this one definitely quallifies

Who was your favorite character and why?

Simon. I loved the way he never gave up, no matter what life threw at him.

Have you listened to any of Christopher Scott’s other performances? How does this one compare?

He's a brilliant narrator, but I think this was his best yet.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The Winter Mantle

Any additional comments?

This was a poigniant read, full of power and emotion, and the struggle between different classes and cultures. Elizabeth Chadwick has a way of vividly bringing to life whatever period of history she's tackling, and her fictional portrayals of real life characters are well researched and sympathetic.

I miss you, Waltheof

I don't want to get into the plot. The narration was excellent. The main thing I want to say about this book is that even though I've started to listen to another book, I'm still thinking about the characters in "The Winter Mantle" I know this is weird, but I miss them!

Male Narrator for Elizabeth Chadwick

What would have made The Winter Mantle better?

After listen to many audible books, and Chadwick audible books, to hear a male voice narrating was disconcerting and therefore, after about 8 pages, I had to stop listening and will be more careful in checking the narrator of a particular novel in the future; similarly, other female authors of midievil historical (romance) novels I will only listen to audible books narrated by female narrators.

What was most disappointing about Elizabeth Chadwick’s story?

The story is great and as with previous Elizabeth Chadwick audible books, with a female narrator, I would have enjoyed instead of not listening and deleting from my library.
