Summary

Henry Pulling, a retired bank manager, meets his septuagenarian Aunt Augusta for the first time in over 50 years at his mother’s funeral. Soon after, she persuades Henry to abandon South wood, his dahlias and the Major next door to travel through Brighton, Paris, Istanbul, Paraguay...

Accompanying his aunt, Henry joins a shiftless, twilight society: mixing with hippies, war criminals and CIA men, as well as smoking pot, breaking all the currency regulations and eventually coming alive after a dull suburban life.

Beautifully written

Astonishingly well narrated. The use of language is wonderful. The book is evocative and also humorous. The characters excellently written. The world of the eccentric Aunt Augusta is weird and wonderful. An English village life seems at once cosy, enviable and dull and petty. However I wanted it to end 3 hours before it did. I feel a heathen for saying this but I got a bit fed up; it seemed more of the same. It’s a book I’m glad I’ve now ‘read’ and I still enjoyed the writing to the end but the story felt, to me, dragged out a bit. It’s Graham Greene!- and I love others I have read but that’s how I felt.

Superb! Excellent narration.

Remembered studying ‘Brighton Rock’ at school and hating it, but loved this Graham Greene book.

Wonderful!

Tim Piggot-Smith truly brings this very funny story alive - his voices/accents made me laugh out loud. Glorious!

Travels indeed

A most enjoyable listen. I loved the honesty of Henry in his late insight into the matter of his life till he meets Aunt A.
what a character she is too! and what adventures she has had and takes Henry into.

Highly recommended.

Both the book and the narration are exhilarating. I enjoyed every moment of its suble humor.

Tim Pigott-Smith is exceptional

Loved this book from opening lines. Narration so wonderful I had to go back to see if other cast involved. Laughed out loud.

Great Narration and Story

As others have said, Tim Piggott-Smith excelled as a narrator and added much to the story. Wonderful plot lines from a bygone world we might recognise very well...

An intriguing story, brilliantly presented.

The story grabs one from the start and gradually unfolds in unexpected ways. The reading is sparkling. I loved it.

Takes you away to old, magical world

Such a lovely book to take you on a journey, away from daily routine. I was slightly disappointed to the end of the story but overall worth reading.
