Summary

Having given up a high-powered job, Tessa Hainsworth had no idea how hard she would struggle when she fulfils her dream of moving to Cornwall. Within months, she is almost ready to return to London: the family is running out of money – fast.

But a chance encounter in the local post office leads her to accept the unlikeliest of job offers – as a post woman. She starts in midwinter, faced with the Christmas rush, a temperamental van, a host of unfamiliar routes and the locals – and their animals.

But, over time, she learns to love a wonderfully colourful cast of characters until the whole community takes her to their hearts and at Cornwall becomes home.

a year in cornwall.

Any additional comments?

after a high flying job becomes too much for Tessa the decision is made to move from London to cornwall to start a new life.
Tessa becomes a postwoman and this is the story of her first year doing the job.
I thought this would be interesting, an enjoyable book, which it was over the first 5 hours but the second five hours became tedious as it seemed to go over the same ground again. the ending saved it.

Boring

Anna Bentinc can do better but she was annoying. Male voices are awful.
Couldn't continue listening!

Not quite my cup of tea

Up with the larks, is a sweet story about life in the countryside, and all the village goings on. Lacked a little substance for me, but easy to listen to and the narrator ok.

Loved it

I absolutely loved this book. Hadn’t realised it was written about Authors actual experience in Cornwall. Hope there’s more to come

Great listen!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this audiobook to anyone as a relaxing, enjoyable, warm-feeling listen with poignant moments to add balance.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Up with the Larks?

I enjoyed the encounters with Batman the dog very much.

What about Anna Bentinck’s performance did you like?

The narrator was easy to listen to and did a very good job of adding character to the various people.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

By turns the book had me both laughing out loud and then crying the next moment.

Any additional comments?

Having spent every childhood holiday in Devon I was pleased to hear that people in Cornwall also call people 'Maid' and 'My Lover' - brought back many happy memories!

Enjoyable, easy read

light and entertaining, easy to relate to characters. read during first visit to Cornwall, and felt it helped me th understand a little about the local culture, including some of the challenges from living in that beautiful place. I came away as enchanted with the scenery as the author had been.
