This book was slow to progress initially but definitely gains momentum as the plot thickens. And boy does it thicken!
While the story can safely be categorised as a paranormal romance, it is so much more. The characters are surprisingly normal, including Simon McKay, the ghost. The story switched from present day to the past throughout the length of the book, giving it a prominent historical feel as well. Then there are elements of adventure, suspense and mystery thrown in as well.
I liked the characters though they aren't necessarily as they seem at first. I suppose that is part of the charm. Poor Laurel came to Scotland to get away from a cheating ex-boyfriend, see her best friend and to take a break from her work. Instead she got so much more and lost more than she bargained for.
I would recommend this story but also encourage listeners to stick through the first bit that does seem a little slow-paced. It gets better as the story progresses.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Simon MacKay, the last Earl of Cleitmuir, who was murdered 200 years ago and Laurel Seville, an antiquities expert from Chicago, who is visiting a friend in Scotland, have no idea what lies ahead for them. I absolutely loved this story from beginning to end! It was creative, suspenseful, romantic, exciting and even heart wrenching in parts. Once I began listening I found it very difficult to put down. Ben Eastman did a wonderful job narrating and made it easy to differentiate each voice. He brought the characters to life and made the listening experience most enjoyable. I did receive this audiobook for free, however I am providing an unbiased review and have no problem recommending this wonderful audiobook.
