I love GWH.
They're always stored in my iPod as their familiarity doesn't irritate and they can be pulled on like a pair of socks to give humorous comfort. I wouldn't like to guess how many times I've listened to them but I've certainly had excellent value for money & I was really looking forward to series 5 as I missed them all during their original radio run.
I've got to be honest, series 5 is poor.
The performances are as strong as ever but the stories are just not quite up to par. For those of us who have been with Giles for a while, the absence of Arabella is a disappointment and the inclusion of Mr Timmis and Charlotte with GWH Travel is also puzzling. We're still in familiar territory with Charterhouse, Budleigh Salterton and Slow Giles but some of the newer facets to Gile's character seem to have been overlooked.
I know I shouldn't mind such things and just enjoy the great writing that is in series 5 but I feel a little bit glum that the continuity is a little awry. Each episode of GWH does stand alone but there is
If I didn't like GWH so much I would be happy to let series 5 be a poor end to a very good series but I really hope the team will produce a brilliant series 6.
Vincent Franklin has been brought in to replace Adrian Scarborough as Mr Timmis but the rest of the key players remain. Some of the guest actors are also returnees from previous shows.
Toby Davies joins the writing team but I do think that the piece misses Graeme Garden who contributed on series 1 - 3.
GWH is a fabulous comedy creation. Please don't let series 5 be the bad end to a great show.
One for the completests out there but if you want to try GWH, and I really do advise that you do, start with series 1 and listen to them in order.
