Summary
The third novel in the Lindsay Gordon series.
When Alison Maxwell, a well-known Glaswegian journalist with an irresistible sexual attraction to both sexes, is found murdered the police look no further than the owner of the scarf used to strangle her.
Lindsay Gordon, however, has other ideas. Maxwell was a serial seductress who kept a secret record of her encounters – including one with Lindsay herself. Recalling the threats that followed the end of the relationship, Lindsay knows all too well the feelings of rage, fear and passion that Alison Maxwell could invoke. Soon Lindsay is embroiled in an investigation involving blackmail, stolen government documents and the vested interests of a group of people determined to keep her from finding the truth.

Shame about the narrator
The book was ok but would’ve been so much better with a different narrator! Her voice is very harsh and makes listening difficult

Disappointing
I have read the previous books in this series and they were great. Well up to Val McDermid's usual fine writing and plotting.
BUT the narrator of this is so terrible I'm not able to enjoy the book at all. I am Scottish so when I tell you her whiny Scot's voice grates on every nerve in my body you'll understand how awful it is. She cannot alter her tone. The narration says someone used an angry tone, a sharp voice, sad, happy - there's no change to the monotonous grind of the narrator's girning.
Read this but for pity's sake avoid the audio book.

Not up to usual high standard
Bit disappointed, underwhelming story and poor choice of narrator. Word count appears to have been bumped up by the title of the book which underpins the story being mentioned a trillion times.

Ditch this narrator!
I have never found a Val McDermid such a struggle - nothing against the Scots accent - that was lovely but as for all the other attempted accents ... well it ranged from dreadful to sheer laughable!

A good plot
.. with enough twists and turns. A surprising ending. In fact the whole book was unpredictable. Only spoiled by the narration which is too high pitched for headphones. Have to turn the volume right down

Really disappointing for Val McDermid
I'm guessing this was an early VMcD novel as it was all a bit predictable and Agatha Christie for me. HATED the narration. It was like listening to my 15yr old self reading aloud in class. No vocal variation and accents awful (I'm Scottish and found her voice incredibly irritating)
Had to force myself to listen at times.

Not as good as other books by Val
Not as good as other books by Val it seems to have lost punch. But saying that I still listened to the book.

Struggled with the narration on this audiobook.
This is the first Val McDermid story I have read/heard but I struggled and hope this is not typical from this author. On headphones the sound for this audio is awful as the narrators voice is too high and scratchy. The story, I am hoping, is not the best Val McDermid has written so I will try another but certainly not with the same narrator.

Decent characters and plot
Enjoyed this as a light read that didn’t have too many twists and turns to keep up with. Engaging characters and relationships
