Disappointing

Unfortunately not as great as the other two books.

The performance was excellent, however the story felt subpar, and character motivations at the beginning of the book didn't make much sense when comparing them to Forever War.

Shame about it being read by Quagmire from Family Guy. It's great to have a follow on from the excellent Forever Wat.

A good follow up to The Forever war. If you enjoyed that, you'll enjoy this. The story isn't as good, but its a good continuance.

From start to finish.

Having recently listened to The Forever War, I was left thirsty for more. I learned of the for-mentioned books sequel, " The Forever Free". Following on with the adventures of William Mandella and Mary Gay.
What a book. I was worried it may not be as inspirational as The Forever War. How wrong I was. the was a fantastic book, containing all the right ingredients to quench my thirst for excitement. I don't want cover the contents as I believe this would spoil this for some, what I can say though is that the original story line was written in 1975 and I have only just to date learned of their existence.
as the title states, I was unable to put this book down "from start to finish". The is something quite profound about Joe Haldeman and his writing style. Read it and you will find out.

A sequel, of sorts

I was eager to get back into the world Haldeman created in 'The Forever War', and while it was slow to start, the book definitely picked up in its second act. However, the ending (which I won't spoil here) seemed clumsy and rushed. None of the actions taken up until the ending have any bearing on the close of the novel and while I found parts of the third act interesting it didn't feel as though they were part of the same book. Worth a listen if you simply must know what happened after the forever war but you'll be left with more questions than answers, and none too satisfying.

Disappointing follow up

Passable genre SF but none of the insight of the original, save your time. If anything the ending of the last one is considerably undermined by this unnecessary sequel.

Forever War & Forever Free would make a glorious film

Great books read many times they would make a great film part 1 The War and Part 2 Free let’s do something original rather than just remakes of old films

decent but...

decent but... the exploration of the weird events at the end was too short. It felt as if it were finished in a hurry. I still enjoyed it but it left a semi frustrating taste in the mouth.

Nothing like I was expecting!

My favourite book is the Forever War so when I learned that there was a sequel I was naturally very excited. I assumed this would be a kind of “El Camino” - to use Breaking Bad terminology - to the Forever War. It wasn’t. But I’m not complaining.

It was so far from what the Forever War was that it took a while for me to adjust. And just when I thought I had adjusted, it deviated further. But in a fascinating way! It explores a universe that Haldeman had obviously thought of and wanted to build on in the Forever War but couldn’t because it wouldn’t have suited the story. He gets to really flex his imagination in Forever Free and show us a world rich in lore and flavour.

My only complaints would be that it wasn’t long enough. The story doesn’t get going until about half way through - leading you to believe that the story is going in another direction - and it doesn’t leave you enough time at the end to enjoy the new developments. You’re left wanting more - or another short story as a follow up (which is how I felt about the Forever War). And Peter Berkrot as the narrator gives a rather sarcastic, almost cynical tone to the story - even in places that don’t warrant such a tone. But his Disney impressions gave me a laugh so I’m still happy!

All in all, I really enjoyed this story. It was nothing like I had expected but I’d say it was a pleasant surprise overall!
