Summary

As one of the youngest ever winners of the Grand National, Nick ‘Foxy’ Foxton’s career as a world-class jockey is on perfect track until a near-fatal accident cuts his dream brutally short. But when he returns to Aintree as a spectator years later, nothing can prepare him for what unfolds.

Minutes before the biggest event on the racing calendar, Nick’s affable American colleague Herb Kovak is shot at point-blank range, the gunman disappearing among the stunned crowd. Along with the police, Nick is left baffled as to why anyone would want to kill such an apparently gentle soul.

With the press speculating links to gangland crime and a crumpled note containing a threatening message found in the dead man’s coat, Nick begins to doubt how well he really knew Herb. And on discovering Herb had named him as the benefactor of his will, Nick questions why he has been entrusted with the legacy. Is this a generous gift from a friend or is it, in fact, a poisoned chalice?

Following in his Father's footsteps

As a great fan of Dick Francis I was very sad to think that there would be no new titles coming along for me to enjoy. Then I bought "Gamble" by his son, Felix.

Here was all the excitement, the fast-moving story, the ingenious twists and the satisfying climax that I had come to expect in the Dick Francis books, and I was gripped! So often when a different writer takes over from a long established favourite the result is disappointing but Felix Francis, who had collaborated with his father before the death of Dick Francis, has succeeded in keeping the tradition alive.

I hope Felix Francis will continue to write more novels and I shall look forward to his next book.

Another great story from the Francis stable....

I enjoyed this story immensely especially as it hadn’t been ‘Americanised’ like so many others I have listened to. Good story, good pace, good characterisation by the author and the reader created a cracking read.

As good as his Dad

This is a great listen. From the first page I was gripped, staying up late to finish it. Michael Maloney's narration is speedy and exciting and his characterisation is superb. The twists at the end are excellent. Highly recommended!

A chip off the block

What made the experience of listening to Gamble the most enjoyable?

A great story, very well written and read.

What did you like best about this story?

The unexpected.

Which character – as performed by Michael Maloney – was your favourite?

Our hero, of course. Can't remember his name it is some weeks since I listened, but I very much enjoyed it and was sorry when the book ended.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but impossible of course.

Any additional comments?

It's very good news that Felix has taken over his father's mantle so beautifully. Many congratulations to him for his knowledge and research.

Gamble on a great listen!

Felix Francis is worthy to follow in his father's footstep in his own right. This highly contemporary novel has all the trademarks if a first class Francis novel and is beautifully read by Michael Malohny,

The dramatic pause

the narrator is too in love... with... the dramatic pause. Made finishing this really hard work.

His father's son

Felix has produced a story with pace and excitement, set in the familiar backdrop (to Dick Francis fans) of equestrian pursuits.

An enjoyable thriller, which is characterised and delivered well by Michael Maloney.

The most appropriate compliment I can think of is... “one for all the Dick Francis fans”.

A good read

Would you listen to Gamble again? Why?

Yes, it is full of information and excitement, and I love both his father's and his own way of writing and the diverse subjects.

What other book might you compare Gamble to, and why?

Other ones by Dick Francis, well written and familiar.

What about Michael Maloney’s performance did you like?

He kept the characters through out, and didn't go over the top, very enjoyable to listen to.

Any additional comments?

I'm pleased to say I wasn't disappointed, it was a very satisfying read
