Summary

Bled dry by interminable warfare, infighting and bloody confrontations with Lord Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, the vast, sprawling Malazan empire simmers with discontent. Even its imperial legions yearn for some respite. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his Bridgeburners and for Tattersail, sole surviving sorceress of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, still holds out - and Empress Lasseen's ambition knows no bounds. However, it seems the empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister forces gather as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand.
Conceived and written on an epic scale, Gardens of the Moon is a breathtaking achievement - a novel in which grand design, a dark and complex mythology, wild and wayward magic and a host of enduring characters combine with thrilling, powerful storytelling to resounding effect. Acclaimed by writers, critics and readers alike, here is the opening chapter in what has been hailed a landmark of epic fantasy: the awesome The Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Great start to a series.

Looking for something to follow Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy I found several reviews for this series and it sounded just what I was looking for. It was. Interesting characters and a plot that you never know where it's going.

Two minor issues though to bear in mind. Firstly this book has a glossary which is not available in audio format. So there are times where you lose the thread slightly as names and places are mentioned which you are unfamilar with.

The other minor issue is that the remaining books in this series are not available on Audible's uk site. I contacted them and they were quick to respond although with less than good news. They do not have the rights to the remaining books. Hopefully this will be resolved at some stage though.

First class, at the moment best fantasy author after Tolkien, the only problem I have is that there should be more audiobooks of Steven E. that's it:)

Bit of a mess.

Any additional comments?

Bought the first 3 books in the series, but didnt make it much into the 2nd. Too many characters are included without any sort of introduction, making many sequences where I have no idea who is talking. The plot is a bit all over the place with no sense of a direction. I just found myself bored.
