Summary
Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world’s biggest companies—and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable. But for Kevin, hacking wasn’t just about technological feats—it was an old fashioned confidence game that required guile and deception to trick the unwitting out of valuable information.
Driven by a powerful urge to accomplish the impossible, Mitnick bypassed security systems and blazed into major organizations including Motorola, Sun Microsystems, and Pacific Bell. But as the FBI’s net began to tighten, Kevin went on the run, engaging in an increasingly sophisticated cat-and-mouse game that led through false identities, a host of cities, plenty of close shaves, and to an ultimate showdown with the feds, who would stop at nothing to bring him down.
Ghost in the Wires is a thrilling true story of intrigue, suspense, and unbelievable escape and a portrait of a visionary whose creativity, skills, and persistence forced the authorities to rethink the way they pursued him, inspiring ripples that brought permanent changes in the way people and companies protect their most sensitive information.

ShIIIEEEEEt!!! It beats the expectations!
I had this book in my wishlist ever since I first subscribed on Audible. Yet, I never got to listen to it until now. I've seen the movie (which was not good!) and I have heard of the story and I knew what it entailed. Yet this book surprised me with its incredible output of fascinating stories and the almost unbelievable ease with which Kevin Mitnick did what he did. It almost coerces you to plunge into his field of "hackery". It was so interesting! The narration was perfect in my view. Not too dramatic and able to relay the boring details of the actual social engineering and so on, and in the same time presenting the funny side of the story in due course. Great book!!!

A great listen
I have read other works by Mitnik so knew some of the stories already but this was still interesting even though on occasions he went more technical than required for the story. Thoroughly recommended unless you are looking for a hackers guide.

Very Interesting Read
I found this a very interesting read. Not so much an hacking book but what the author refers to as social enginerring. conning people out of the credentials and information needed to infliltrate computer systems.

What made the experience of listening to Ghost in the Wires the most enjoyable?
It was captivating from the start, even if you're only a little bit interested in technology or hacking in general. It's like a James Bond adventure in cyberspace and telephony systems and all based on the exploits of one remarkable nerdy guy!
What did you like best about this story?
The sheer mastery he possessed of both technology and social engineering is fascinating to listen to, the way he outclasses the FBI and is ahead of them at almost every turn even leaving them doughnuts in his fridge when he knew they were about to raid him!
What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?
This was the first audio book I've listened to and it's certainly one of the best performances. It didn't even enter my head that this wasn't Kevin Mitnick himself reading this aloud.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It's more of an adventure story rather than high drama so it's more action than emotion, however he comes across as a really nice guy and not the mastermind criminal he was made out to be at the time all this was happening.
Any additional comments?
I've recommended this audio book to absolutely all my friends and family and those who have listened to it have not been disappointed!

Riveting! Captivating! Amazing! Insightful!
Didn't wanna put this down & loved the hair raising pace. An awe inspiring insight into the electronic world of computer, phone systems & social engineering; complexed systems most of us take for granted.
Kevin Mitnick is a genius.
Kevin's motivation & ethics for hacking are admirably intriguing. In my books he's a 'top man'.
If you've the slightest interest in computer systems, security or social engineering this book is a Must Read.

Fascinating
Absolutely fascinating story, brilliantly read by the narrator. It is, as you would expect, somewhat geeky (and at times more than a bit repetitive), but if you are interested in this kind of thing Mitnick’s life story is well worth a listen.
