Summary

Hattie finds herself relegated to the factory floor on her return from the war. Her workmates are unforgiving at Hattie's attempt to raise herself up, and she is soon ostracised. After journeying to Australia to marry her husband, Clara is betrayed and returns penniless, homeless and trying to raise a child alone.

Lou's daughter and parents are killed by a bomb blast. By day she works at the factory; by night she roams the bomb sites, half mad with grief. These women forge a bond that will ultimately allow them to find hope.

Hattie’s Return home

When I started listening to this story I wasn’t sure that I was going to like it but as it continued I found it hard to stop listening. Life after the war was so difficult for many people. As usual, Anne Dover is a brilliant narrator and thank you Mary Gibson. I was so glad everything turned out well in the end and a sequel would be good to hear what happened next.

Another Mary Gibson classic

I have not listened to them in chronological order, as perhaps I should but I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of her books. Anne Dover's narration is perfect. The characters come to life and this story with it's ups and downs of war torn London is another winner!

Great book!

Wonderful story. Very gripping throughout. The characters were expertly brought to life by the narrator and I was transported to the harsh life for many folk during the post war years. I highly recommend this book.

An Excellent book

A very vivid portrait of life in the war years with the hardships that most families went through. Where there was no work no food but you relied on love. Brilliantly written. Well worth a read.

A lovely....

storyline with some lovely characters in and antics they get up to. The narrator was very good at using different voices for the characters.
