Summary

A refreshingly practical and honest guide that rewrites the script on ADHD

Peter Shankman is a busy guy - a media entrepreneur who runs several businesses, gives keynote speeches around the world, hosts a popular podcast, runs marathons and Iron Mans, is a licensed skydiver, dabbles in angel investing, and is a loving father to his young daughter.

Simply put, he always seems to have more than 24 hours in a day. How does he do it? Peter attributes his unusually high energy level and extreme productivity to his ADHD.

In Faster Than Normal, Shankman shares his hard-won insights and daily hacks for making ADHD a secret weapon for living a full and deeply satisfying life. Both inspiring and practical, the book presents life rules, best practices, and simple but powerful ways to:

  • Harness your creative energy to generate and execute your ideas
  • Direct your hyperfocus to get things done
  • Identify your pitfalls - and avoid them
  • Streamline your daily routine to eliminate distractions
  • Use apps and other tech innovations to free up your time and energy

Filled with ingenious hacks and supportive self-care advice, this is the positive, practical book the ADHD community has long needed - and is also an invaluable handbook for anyone who's sick of feeling overwhelmed and wants to drive their faster-than-normal brain at maximum speed...without crashing.

Critic reviews

"Peter is a pioneer, an adventurer, an inventor and a seer. His advice is the best kind of advice. It is advice learned in the trenches, in the arena, on the fields of life." (Edward Hallowell, MD, from the foreword, best-selling author of Driven to Distraction)
"Peter Shankman is living proof that living outside the bell-shaped curve, combined with a drive to succeed, can produce amazing results." (Jordan D. Metzl, MD, author of The Exercise Cure)
"While ADHD may be considered a ‘deficit’ to some, Shankman positions it as an attribute within the context of our immediate future. ADHD is a unique gift of creative synthesis that makes sense only inside of the complex digital networks and hyper-stimulation that now defines us." (Amanda Steinberg, CEO, Worth Financial, and author of Worth It)

Changed my life

Has taught me how my brain works and how to manage it, whereas before I thought I was broken and less intelligent. Above all though this book has given me hope that I can achieve my goals, and now I'm glad that I have ADHD

If open and aware of your condition, this is a MUST read

I liked the content, the delivery, the tips and the humour, if you didn’t get anything useful then you’re not applying the advice given, from day 1 of listening I saw the huge potential for “self help” with strict disciplines and practices.
I immediately began eating better and exercising more and found a huge increase to my faster than normal abilities, also an autistic adhd’er and having discovered some of the skills through undiagnosed self discovery I am aware that it really does come down to Maintanance and discipline.
Product placement was a little off putting and lowered quality, but useful if those things do affect you and worth the discount if relevant to you…

It’s our duty to help others struggling just like he says.

An absolute must-listen, particularly for partners

If you've figured out you've got a touch of ADD, then this book is gold dust. I don't know how it would suit someone at the more extreme full-on ADHD end of the spectrum, but for me, there are some top common sense tips which have helped greatly.

There is a chapter for anyone living with someone with ADD, which you really should play to them. It all makes so much sense.

I particularly liked the use of the "SQUIRREL!" audio bullet points. And overall it's actually very funny.

The only bit that makes me a little uncomfortable is the rather Americanised use of terms like 'gifted', or referring to what I would call 'normal' people as having "slower" brains. To a 'slower brained' person (his words!), this might come across as rather patronising. I guess that's just one of those 'different side of the pond' language things.

If you don't 'get' much of this book, then it's possible you've either not got ADD or have misdiagnosed yourself.
If a whole bunch of stuff rings true and you're left thinking "OMFG that's me" - then this is for you!
But if you're more concerned about whether the author is using a slightly higher voice when reading a female quote, than what he's actually saying, then it's more than likely that you DO have ADD and should be listening more closely to the what is being said.

Well worth a credit!

Great positive spin on a so-called "disorder"

I got this (and highly recommend this) for it putting a positive slant on a "disorder" which is actually just a different/abnormal/less common - but certainly doesn't have to be a negative - way of thinking/behaving.

Full of lots of "common sense" advice that would be good for everyone, with or without ADHD.
However putting this universal good advice (plus specific tips) into context of ADHD made it more relatable and sink in a bit better.

As I am at a stage where I'm trying to sort things out with a bit more focus, listening to this on commutes home helped inspire me to be more proactive rather than fall into bad habits when arriving home tired. Again, the positive framing of the book is great, but of course it does have examples of how it will not be if one doesn't take the time to examine themselves and actively try and grow.

Main thing I learned for me personally was to use exercise to boost dopamine et. al. as a tool to help keep focus (as well as the more obvious fitness and mood). And actually bothering to start writing things down rather than leaving it all in my racing head.

Brilliant!

Recommended to everyone with ADHD.
Honestly, this is the first audiobook I’ve managed to finish in around 4 years.
I listened to it on 2x speed (I’m faster than normal) and still heard and felt every word (quality narration).

I’ll be re-listening regularly. Thank you Peter Shankman 💥

A comfort and practical guide

Very nice approach to telling you what you can do to better yourself, without (not really but it's optional) telling you what to do. Very entertaining.
