Summary
Steve Biddulph's Raising Boys was a global phenomenon. The first book in a generation to look at boys' specific needs, parents loved its clarity and warm insights into their sons' inner world. But today, things have changed. It's girls that are in trouble.
There has been a sudden and universal deterioration in girls' mental health, starting in primary school and devastating the teen years.
Steve Biddulph's Raising Girls is both a guidebook and a call to arms for parents. The five key stages of girlhood are laid out so that you know exactly what matters at which age and how to build strength and connectedness into your daughter from infancy onwards.
Raising Girls is both fierce and tender in its mission to help girls more at every age. It's a book for parents who love their daughters deeply, whether they are newborns, teenagers, young women - or anywhere in between.
Feeling secure, becoming an explorer, getting along with others, finding her soul, and becoming a woman - at last, there is a clear map of girls' minds that accepts no limitations, narrow roles or selling out of your daughter's potential or uniqueness.
All the hazards are signposted - bullying, eating disorders, body image and depression, social media harms and helps - as are concrete and simple measures for both mums and dads to help prevent their daughters from becoming victims. Parenthood is restored to an exciting journey, not one worry after another, as it's so often portrayed.
Steve talks to the world's leading voices on girls' needs and makes their ideas clear and simple, adding his own humour and experience through stories that you will never forget.
Along with his fellow psychologists worldwide, Steve is angry at the exploitation and harm being done to girls today. With Raising Girls he strives to spark a movement to end the trashing of girlhood, equipping parents to deal with the modern world and getting the media off the backs of our daughters.
Raising Girls is powerful, practical and positive. Your heart, head and hands will be strengthened by its message.
Critic reviews
Praise for Steve Biddulph:
"When you find a guru willing to change his mind when evidence and humanity prompt, you rejoice. For me, Steve Biddulph - one of the most popular [parenting gurus] in the world, with four million books sold - is the man." (Libby Purves, The Times)
"Biddulph...has a built-in feel good factor. Parenting books too often make one fell inadequate, but Biddulph's left me refreshed and optimistic." (The Express)
"Steve's advice is easy to follow - and more importantly, it works." (BBC Family Life Magazine)
Praise for Raising Boys:
"Packed full of pithy wisdom on what it is to move from boyhood to manhood and how to help your (not-so) little one on his way." (The Independent)

Absolutely brilliant
This book, as a female reader and parent, was spot on for me. It made me think about opportunities for my two, young girls as well as thinking about the other female adolescents around me and even made me reflect on my own childhood. I’m sure I’ll come back to this book in the challenging years to come to centre me when things get tough!

Good bit of common sense.
Helpful to bring good practice to the conscious mind. Helps Prevent going through the motions and flags a few things that might need adjusting.

Few valuable tips but Not the best parenting book i read
I enjoyed first few chapters. I think the stages of girl development are very helpful to understand and very good tips till age 5 . Afterwards it become more cultural specific and I couldn’t relate to most ideas.

Lovely Book
I'm so glad I took the time to listen to this. I hope I come back to it over and over as my daughter grows up. Full of helpful, emotionally and eye opening information for parents of girls.

Totally sensational...not in a good way
Presents opinions as fact, hyperbolic language, overly emotive. Overall, not s good resource for a fact-seeking parent. Very disappointed.

A valuable reference for every parent
Excellent! Common sense really (not so common). Told from a very practical and humble perspective. As a Muslim, I don't agree with everything, but says >95% agreement is not bad at all. A lot of the things we mostly do, but the author tells us how to be more deliberate, how to have the most impact to enjoy our daughters (and vice versa) as fully as possible. I'm off to read the boys version.

Hasn’t aged so well
There are some great insights in this book and the writing style is very accessible. I enjoyed the narration as well. Some ideas are still applicable and I did pick up some practical tips for improving my relationship with my daughter.
However, a lot has changed since 2017 though, including the social media landscape and gender identities and moving away from stereotypes. Although I think I might have found some of the notions of gender represented in here concerning a decade ago. It would be great to have the book bought up to date to include more recent research and neuroscience as well as modern thinking on gender and sexual fluidity.

Raising girls as they are boys
The book is not so insightful if you are looking for girls specific parenting advices.
In short the author thinks girls should be raisen as they are boys. Then, they will think and behave more like boys. And that should be your goal of raising girls.
