Summary

Run Smart: Debunking Marathon Myths uses the latest scientific research to show how preparing for and running marathons can be made easier, and in doing so challenges many of the myths that surround marathon running.

The book draws on the author's experience as one of the UK's leading sports scientists, his extensive research background in marathon running and his experience as a marathon runner to provide credible advice to runners to support their preparation for a marathon.

The book also challenges many current concepts, myths and ideas, providing science-based alternatives in areas such as training and nutrition that will optimise and ease a runner's preparation for and completion of the 26.2 mile distance. This highly accessible book uses the latest scientific findings to support new runners training for their first marathons and to help more experienced athletes improve and train smarter.

Great for first-timers

If you could sum up Run Smart in three words, what would they be?

Reassuring. Simplistic. Repetitive.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Not relevant.

What about Gavin Osborn’s performance did you like?

His performance was adequate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no.

Any additional comments?

I've run a few marathons, but would in no way regard myself as an expert. So although I could see that this book was largely written for first-time marathon runners, I was attracted by its promise to help "more experienced athletes improve and train smarter".

It's *great* for people who are doing a marathon for the first time. Reassuring, calm and upbeat. Buy it. You'll be glad you did. Especially if you're not fussed about your race time and are just concerned with getting across the finish line.

As for runners who have done one or more marathons, however: probably not worth the trouble. It didn't teach me a single thing that I hadn't read or experienced before. There was no tip I picked up from this book that I will take away with me. As I wrote above, I'm NOT IN ANY WAY particularly knowledgeable about marathon running. It was a bit simplistic, with a surprising, and vaguely annoying, amount of repetition for what is a relatively short book.

Good tips. Might give it a go myself.

Good, but tables of data don't really work in audio books. Might be worth kindlling it as well.

Great Running Guide

A great help towards understanding running on a level of science. Great plans who wish to do a marathon for the fist time with realistic training schedule.

very basic content, nothing specific

just a collection of high level advice that doesn't account for much. If someone is looking for clear direction, if what to eat, how much and whe n this isn't the book for you.
