Summary

An inspirational toolkit for solo living - full of sound, practical advice, warmth and humour. Whether you view living alone as the ultimate compromise or the ultimate luxury, it presents daily challenges, such as cooking for one, organising holidays, juggling finances and avoiding the siren call of wine, Ugg boots and Netflix.

And there are the less tangible tests, like nailing the octopus of loneliness to the wall and holding your head high in a society where solo living is viewed (consciously or not) as the runner-up prize.

Author Jane Mathews believes that to be truly content living alone, it pays to examine every aspect of your life - relationships, health, home, finances, interests and spirituality - and then take action. No matter what your unique situation, there's something here for you. Jane provides the map, and you choose the route to a more joyful, contented life.

Lots of sound advice mixed with humour

I have lived alone for a couple of years following a relationship breakdown and this book shows many ways I could be handling my living situation better and creating a positive solo life rather than neglecting myself and mourning over what will never be. I was impressed by the plucky spirit of this Australian woman who dined in restaurants and took foreign holidays alone and found strategies to cope with difficult days like Christmas. Along the way she admitted to the challenges of single life such as loneliness and thoughtless comments from friends about her situation, but she took control of her attitude. Highly recommended for anyone living solo who is usually fine but still has the occasional wobble.

A Mindful Listen

Very much enjoyed this book. Jane Mathews has captured the art of living alone for herself and her insights show others how they too can make "living with myself" a splendid adventure. A book I know I will listen to many times.

Enjoyable but not wholly suited to audio format

Overall I enjoyed this listen, some parts hit home quite hard and others made me smile and say “yes that me!”
But be aware this is aimed wholly at females living alone, and almost all the references and guidance on practical matters are Australian. I also found lots of the book comprised repetitive lists and random quotes - neither lent themselves well to audio book format.

Superficial

One of those books for people who really don’t have problems just need someone to point out the obvious and give a little confidence to do things alone and feel okay about it.

The author has children, friends, the health and means to travel and and lives in a wonderful vibrant city with beautiful beaches ( however you have to have means even to find accommodation) Sydney also has good public transport. If you live in some rural cultural desert, have some chronic problems that cause mobility restrictions (or likely no transport or non existent public transport. If your older and friends are leaving the planet, live far away, or likely you are a widow or widower, have no children, and on a low income, you can rule out a lot of what is offered, like travelling or eating out (unless Greggs and McDonald’s are the local haute cuisine). Events, galleries or classes just don’t exist in a lot of places.

A lazy book. The author clearly has passion for the subject, maybe her next project would be to connect with real people struggling with isolation and tell their stories “. Tim Guest wrote a a great book called Second Lives where he engaged with some people who really struggled but found meaning and connection through a video game. He connected with those people. However, suggesting the internet is not new or really helps to connect in a genuine human way. Most people living alone already access them. Facebook, Netflix, apps online classes are not life and the author constantly refers to them.

I rather regret paying to help fund another holiday for her 😄

Lively , genuine and honest.

One of my favourite book ever, easy to read and re-read with same spark of joy when to live alone and happy requires strength of mind and independent .nearly more skills and responsibility and create your own freedom and happiness ,I love that book and in my weak times love to hear it again and again boosting my solo life with joy.
