Summary

Everything you need to know about self-care: what it is, why it's important and why it's such a struggle and how to integrate it into day-to-day life.

There's a damaging misconception in society that putting ourselves first is an act of selfishness. But self-care is not just a millennial buzzword. Without the restorative power of self-care, how will we ever escape the vicious circle where we're sick and fed up of feeling sick and fed up? Self-care is a tool, accessible to us all, which helps us to take responsibility for our own happiness - our physical, emotional, psychological and social needs.

Jayne Hardy, founder and CEO of The Blurt Foundation, argues that it is the best preventative measure available to us to combat overwhelmedness, stress and ill health in our hectic, modern world. The Self-Care Project is for those who have been feeling off-kilter for a while but have not been able to put the finger on the 'why'. It is a no-nonsense, practical journey to help you do just that. It'll walk you through the case for self-care (why it's so darn important) and why it isn't selfish at all, help you explore what self-care means for you and what your obstacles might be and provide advice on how to chisel out daily space for self-care in a practical, achievable and realistic way.

Great book.

Really enjoyed this book and will listen again and again. Certainly recommend. It is very easy to forget about looking after yourself or even know where to begin sometimes!

Great Book

Really enjoyed this book. I listened to it while I was working out at the gym. The self care tips are often things we forget during times of personal crisis/ depression. I listened to this book during a personal low period and it is helping get me back on track.

Definitely a nice book for some but not everyone

I decided to have a listen to this after a complete breakdown in the middle of a masters. I've always been a bit of an overachiever: always got the best grades, went to the best universities, worked for one of the biggest fashion corporations in the world. Things fell apart in the middle of a masters when I was working so hard that I stopped eating, or washing properly, or seeing friends, or taking any care of myself because I was so stressed about deadlines, and was forced to take a break to recover when I couldn't get out of bed for months with anxiety.
While this book has some great tips, and certainly not a waste of time, I think that a lot of the advice was basic, and was geared towards someone with a different personality or lifestyle to me. Firstly the author announces that she has a very introverted personality--I'm quite the opposite, and have always been quite sociable. Secondly, she's a mother and talks a lot about having to put others before her needs--I'm an independent student in my mid-twenties living in another country to my family and so-far haven't really had much responsibility with having to put others' needs before mine regularly. Thirdly, she says she hasn't been that pushed with career ambition--I've always been very driven with ambition and creativity, and it was this that pushed me over the edge where I was expecting too much and to get it right on the first go. Although her advice on how to make self-care a habit is useful, it was maybe a bit too generalised for me, and nothing that they don't already teach you in most counselling/CBT.

The Self Care Project

Jayne Hardy has written an the definitive truth about Depression , The recovery process and touched the heart of millions with her candid approach to recognising the signs and symptoms of this very miss understood and difficult subject. She removes the shame and the feeling of isolation ,she recognises the signs and symptoms with her own real life experience and provides a road map to Self Care which is at its core ,the stepping stone of recovery. She recognises the dialog ,the self sabotaging verbal bullshit that the brain creates to keep one stuck and through communicating her experience with adolescent depression ,which affects up all has written a masterpiece to the road to recovery .
I think that this book and others like it ,should be thought in primary and secondary school ,as I feel that most adults including parents are ill equipped to handling or even understanding the effects of depression and the steps that young adults need to learn to keep a healthy mental attitude.

The best self care book I’ve listened to

This book is absolutely brilliant, the best self care book I’ve ever listened to. I felt like this book was written for me, as I could identify so much with the topics discussed. It’s absolutely down to earth and it’s full of common sense and excellent basic advice.
This is a book which I will re read to recap on when needed.
I found the narrator spoke so fast. When your head is feeling like scrambled eggs, it’s easier to absorb information if it’s said at a slower speed. Listened to someone who is speed reading I find difficult.

I really hope this amazing lady writes more regarding this subject, as I love her down to earth nature, and her amazing approach regarding self care.

Self Care for Beginners

This is a very good book and one I enjoyed. It’s very similar to books I’ve read before but it re-confirms. I would say it’s a great place to start if you’re starting your self care journey.
