Summary

Kicked out of the underworld and cursed to walk this earth for all eternity, Ace Dante finds solace in helping others avoid the wrath of the gods.

But when warrior-bitch, Queen of Cats, and Ace's ex-wife, Bastet, hires him to stop whoever is slaughtering her blessed women, Ace is caught between two of the most powerful deities to have ever existed: Isis and Osiris.

The once-revered gods aren't dead. They're back, and Ace is in their way.

An Action Packed Start To This Egyptian UF Series!

I think you know that I'm already a fan of Ms DaCosta's writing style - I love her Vail series - but had forgotten that I had read this story in 2017 as part of the Bad Magic: 10 Novels of Demons, Djinn, Witches, Warlocks, Vampires, and Gods Gone Rogue box set.

So, what did I like about it?
I downloaded Hidden Blade for my Kindle as if was free and also downloaded the narration for free using my monthly audible credit. Double freebie – result!! I alternated between reading the ebook, listening to the narration before bed but my favourite was when I read along to the narration – it really brings the story alive.

I find Ms DaCosta's writing style intelligent, engaging and very easy to read. I like how she paces her plots and the balance of tension, mystery and action she uses as well as the sprinkling of humour that she includes. As a narrated book, I enjoyed Paul Woodson's performance immensely; the pace at which he read the story, the tonal variations he used during different scenes and the change in voice he used for each character's dialogue. I would definitely buy books narrated by him in the future.

Hidden Blade has dark themes and some upsetting scenes but although I didn't blubber like a baby reading it, a few of the more poignant, emotional scenes did cause the odd tear to trickle down my cheek.

What I liked about this book, was that I was never quite sure how things would end; the tension built dramatically, my blood boiled with frustration at the injustice and I couldn’t work out which character would make it to the next book and I loved that I was kept guessing.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, there is sarcastic humour and well written banter in this tale too which made me smile, together with beautiful glimmers of humanity that warmed my old heart. I feel it's a sign of quality writing and character connection when an author can make me feel and get so caught up in the story.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
I did give this book a 5 star rating, so no, nothing niggled or grated on my nerves while reading it.

That’s not to say that I didn’t find the actions, reasoning and behaviour of some of our main characters frustrating at times but (in my opinion), that’s deliberate; it’s all part of the journey and character/story development that Ms DaCosta makes us, the reader, experience to make the whole tale so involving.

I would also just like to add, I know that Hidden Blade is the first book in a six book series, and as such, I expected to have some questions left unanswered but fear not, dear reader, there is no life or death cliffhanger at the end of this book! WooHoo! Brownie points to you Ms DaCosta!

So, basically what I’m saying is...
I really enjoyed this book; it’s an action packed start to this Egyptian urban fantasy series! It had everything that I look for in a 5 star read; it’s well written with a huge amount of twists & turns that kept me guessing throughout this action packed, emotional roller-coaster of an urban fantasy tale!

Due to the graphic violence and sexual/dark themes, I’d recommend Hidden Blade to adults who are not offended by content of this nature who are fans of urban fantasy adventures with gritty story-lines and lots of action.

Enjoyable but disappointing

Don't get me wrong this is a good story but it's not a great story. Maybe it's a first book in the series and it's just going to take off but after reading the great reviews I had high hopes and ended up feeling rather underwhelmed. Ace just irritated me. He was never a hero nor an anti-hero, he never overcame this 'blackness' he apparently contained and saw the light, did his good deed etc. In fact his blackness never seemed all that dark. I never got the feeling he was capable of dark deeds and all in all he was just kind of meh. I am very glad I didn't use my credits for this and got it at a good price otherwise I think I would be feeling a bit cheated. I think this is the kind of book you read if you are awaiting a release and are finished with all your other books. I probably will read the next installment just not yet. Of note the writing style is very good without any grammatical errors, spelling mistakes or plot mistakes. I just think that the author could have developed her characters better. I never cheered anyone on nor did I wish anyone a slow painful death lol. This confirms that I never became emotionally invested in any characters.
