Summary

Britain has been defined by its conflicts, its conquests, its men and its monarchs. To say that it's high time it was defined by its women is a severe understatement. Jenni Murray draws together the lives of 21 women to shed light upon a variety of social, political, religious and cultural aspects of British history.

In lively prose Murray reinvigorates the stories behind the names we all know and reveals the fascinating tales behind those less familiar. From famous queens to forgotten visionaries and from great artists to our most influential political actors, A History of Britain in 21 Women is a veritable feast of history.

A History of Britain in 21 Women profiles Boadicea, Queen Elizabeth I, Aphra Behn, Caroline Herschel, Fanny Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane Austen, Mary Somerville, Mary Seacole, Ada Lovelace, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Emmeline Pankhurst, Ethel Smyth, Constance Markievicz, Gwen John, Nancy Astor, Barbara Castle, Margaret Thatcher, Mary Quant and Nicola Sturgeon.

Critic reviews

"I can't think of any more seductive way of learning about the past than meeting its principals as if they were friends in a room. That's the gift that Jenni Murray gives us." (Gloria Steinem)
"Murray chooses 21 women who changed the world, and tells their remarkable stories with her own extraordinary wit, passion and piercing insight. She is the perfect guide." (Helen Castor)

Interesting set of mini biographies

Interesting range of women featured.

The book felt like it needed a stronger uniting element, such as British women in science - the author doesn't really intend to draw out any overarching themes about the development of British culture or politics or how the author thinks they should be used to promote social development etc.

Still an interesting listen and worth the time, just lacking a little extra something to tie it together more. Looking forward to trying out the History of the World in 21 Women.

Inspirational !

Thank you Audible for including this book into your Daily Deal. I've already bought 3 copies on Amazon to give this book as presents. As a lifetime fan of Woman's Hour it's been a pleasure to listen to Jenni Murray, like spending time with an old friend. Jenni & I are a similar age so we've lived through some interesting times in women's emancipation. The stories of these women, particularly the ones further back in time, are truly remarkable and inspirational. The cameo descriptions in this book have inspired me to learn more about those who's stories were less known to me and, as far as I'm concerned, that's the mark of a great book - well done Jenni.

loved it!

This was great. I recommend it to everyone. At points it did fill me with righteous rage and want to throw stones are the patriarchy (or at least their windows). I also learned some great trivia (such was where the name "mini skirt" came from). Jenni Murray is funny, sympathetic and not always withholding judgment as she looks at the lives and achievements of 21 truly great women.

Loved it this is a must read for everyone

Loved it, the women presented in this book form a fantastic example to be followed by men and women of today. They struggled and never gave up in pursuit of their rights and freedoms, and neither should we.

Very enjoyable and interesting

Any additional comments?

Fascinating insights. This audible book was right down my alley as I enjoy hearing the biographies of famous people. For me this is a infinitely more interesting listening than Matthew Paris's Great Lives on Radio 4. I have now just purchased from Amazon Kindle the Complete Novels of Fanny Burney after listening about her and how Jane Austen used to be a fan of hers.
