Critic reviews

"It will seduce anyone, Civil War neophyte or fanatic, for its authority and judgments....There is not a bad chapter in this book. This Mighty Scourge is a marvelous read from a master historian. Like all good history, what it makes you want to do is know more." ( Boston Globe)

Essential Listening

I was really surprised by the content of this book/reading. I had not appreciated - being from and living in the UK - the extent of self deception in the USA concerning the Civil War, or the war's continuing influence on current USA politics. That said Van Dyck has a lot to answer for in the UK as regards our Civil War (or War of three Kingdoms) where we've been collectively under his spell and that of the doomed Gentry in their silks and satins ever since. Essential listening in my opinion because he connects events with what is happening today and makes one think. In my opinion the ideas in this book and the conclusions drawn explain a lot about the USA today. Many people will disagree with the content - life is hard - pin back your ears and listen. This book has important lessons for us all.
