Summary

One of the most enthralling true adventure stories ever written, We Die Alone, set in Nazi-occupied Norway in 1943, is an epic tale of survival against staggering odds.

It begins with an ambushed commando raid that leaves all but one of the expatriate resistance fighters dead or captured. Though wounded, Jan Baalsrud, the sole survivor, takes off on a courageous, incredible trek into the wilds of the Lyngen Alps, while the Nazis pursue him relentlessly. He suffers frostbite, snowblindness, and a terrible fall in an avalanche. At last, delirious and near death, he chances on to a cabin, where the first in a series of remarkably brave and clever men and women come to his aid. These "ordinary heroes" will eventually get the crippled Baalsrud to safety and freedom, and the amazing story of how they do it will fill listeners with wonder at the capability of the human spirit.

Critic reviews

"Awe-inspiring....Stuart Langton's narration is an apt fit. His delivery is as spare as the text and every bit as intriguing. His voice has a force of delivery that makes this exciting and unbelievable tale one that the listener will want to hear in one sitting." ( AudioFile)
"Almost unbelievable. We Die Alone is a spine chiller. It may well become a legend." ( Boston Post)
"One of the most remarkable survival stories ever written." ( Library Journal)

Brilliantly written book. Narrator great too who I believe is the author himself.

On course to reading 50 books this year, and this was the best of the lot.

Excellent story - amazing courage

I had seen the film 'The 12th Man' and so was eager to read the book - absolutely amazing courage by Jan and indeed all the Norwegians who helped him back to Sweden. So brave. Highly recommended.

Outstanding

I am a Royal Navy pilot who has spent several winters in the area around where this story happened operating deep in to the Arctic. This is an incredible story of survival and escape. The opening line sums it up well, this story sounds unbelievable, but it happened! Superbly narrated and I just kept having to listen for more.

An amazing account of a Norwegian’s stubborn refusal to give up.

A true story of survival against enemies, the Arctic, human error and Nazis.

You’ve no right to feel cold again after reading this.

Wow , gripped from first minute to the last.

If the Second World War and the stories of escapes, resistance and perseverance are you thing then this book will not disappoint, how has this man’s escape story not been made into a film .

Incredible human tenacity.

Incredible human tenacity.
The human spirit is not easily cowered!
A story of never giving up ....defying death multiple times . This is a different way of looking at the impact of the 2nd WW in a country that was not at the heart of the conflict....but you could not tell so given the gripping narration. Loved it!
