Summary

Every now and then a self-help book comes along that questions the very nature of happiness, shakes the very foundation of all the things you hold dear, and forces you to reconsider every assumption you've ever made. This isn't one of those books.

How to Do Everything and Be Happy is a book for ordinary people. With ordinary lives. It's for people who have been ambling along and wondering why they're not - well - just that little bit happier. It's a book for most people. It's a book for you.

Mumbo jumbo and jargon free, How to Do Everything and Be Happy is direct, practical, occasionally witty, and stuffed full of ways to make your life just that bit happier. If you've got a brain in your head, if you can pick up a pen, if you've got half an inkling about what makes you smile, How to Do Everything and Be Happy will show you how to fit those things into your life and, as a consequence, feel much, much happier.

What a great book!

A very accessible, practical guide to getting to most out of your life. It covers lots of ideas that I will be trying out over the next few months. However, the book offers these ideas without being in any way preachy or condescending, remembering that people are all different - and offering advice on how you can adapt the ideas to make them work for you.

It is read by the author who has a very friendly, warm and informal style - highly recommended

Just Buy It

What a stunningly well written - and narrated book (narration by the author). This is not the first edition - and it shows. All the little niggling things have been covered - and Peter Jones is at pains to say 'if this particular idea doesn't work for you - don't do it'. I can't think that I will do everything he recomends in his book, but I have implented some of his ideas (probably do more aftrer re-listening) and feel I am in better control of my life already. Not completely, but few people have the luxury of being in complete control, life keeps getting in the way, but I am certainly not living 'life by default' now!

If you can't gain something from this book you are either perfect (so won't even be bothering to read this) or you are happy living a life of chaos.

Simple. Sensible. Salubrious. Sharp.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by the good Mr Peter Jones. I've read half a tonne of self help and personal development books, but Peter's approach is both a pleasant distillation of other good material, as well as a welcome divergence from the traditional, somewhat overly heavy, personal development tomes. With a great balance of science, sense, and practical guidance that is INCREDIBLY easy to implement, follow, and stick with - I would highly recommend this book to both newbies, and seasoned self-help readers alike. Expect a pleasant, funny, chatty, and useful journey that will help you make "those" changes you've wanted to make sometime to make yourself.... well.... happier!

A fun way to get the message

What did you like most about How to Do Everything and Be Happy?

Okay - if you're American then you may struggle with this book. If you let it, it will change your life with a healthy dose of dry, British humour. The messages aren't that new - it's the same overall idea expressed in Getting Things Done with a twist.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud a few times and immediately bought another Peter Jones book (How to Eat Loads and Stay Slim) as soon as I finished it.

Any additional comments?

My only criiticism is that I would have liked some printed resources alongside the audiobook. Hmmm... I might need to get a printed version, too. Damn. I hate it when that happens.

Nice ideas but...

Seems like this book is intended to be a self help life changing book for those of us without much inclination to get off the sofa, never mind sail around the world on a self built canoe.

If "Getting things done" and "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" are really beyond you, then this has some nice ideas, but if you need to be reminded at the end of each chapter to buy a diary (yes Peter, I do have a diary), then perhaps you'd be better off sticking in the fiction section.

On the brighter side, I took away some interesting ideas, and warmed rapidly to Peter himself who combines an excellent written style with great narration - a rare combination.

Some great ideas with very engaging narration

I often find self-help books a disappointment as really I want someone to do it for me, but this book was inspiring and I have actually tried some of the tools and techniques described. "Boxing Day" was a fantastic idea and I can see why it comes early on in the book as it was so easy to implement - at least once - and get some immediate benefits. The author's style of narration is open and engaging, making you feel that he empathises with the trials of busy modern life. The 'Live Life Now' list is on my desk as I write - and is growing! I have ticked off a couple of items though. The snow earlier in the year was a help as days suddenly became freed up for spontaneous activity that re-energised me and helped me review my goals. I wouldn't say it has worked miracles (I did already have a diary and used it) but I feel vindicated for being a list maker! Definitely worth the listen and I even bought the book as well so I could refer more easily to the Action Points.

not happy

When I heard the sample for this book, I thought that it sounded very interesting and liked the sound of Peter Jones's voice. I felt that he would be easy to listen to and he was. Sadly, the book is very disapointing and very repetative. I wish i had a pound for every time he says the words Boxing Day.
