Summary
Former Top Gear Stig Ben Collins shares expert skills and wisdom refined over a 20-year career as one of the best drivers in the world - from Le Mans Series racing to NASCAR, piloting the Batmobile and dodging bullets with James Bond.
Ben's philosophy of anticipation, smoothness and speed, honed over thousands of hours of elite-level performance, is really about economy of motion - which also gives you greater control, safety and fuel efficiency. How to Drive is about driving better, not faster.
Whether you've been behind the wheel for the best part of 30 years or you bought your first L-plate 10 seconds ago, this is the stuff your instructor missed, your dad forgot and your mates pretend to know...but don't.

Entertaining but impractical
Even though I love the stories Ben Collins shares, his advanced driving tips elude me simply because 1. I do not have the car to do them with, and 2. if I had one, verbal instructions on how to parallel park a car while sliding it in just to not work for me.
For me I'd have loved more stories and less instructions.

As much fun as a speed awareness coarse
Ever been on a speed awareness coarse in place of 3-points - well this is about as much fun as that afternoon you spent being preached to!
Ben sounds at times like he is reading the words for the first time (which i suspect maybe true) & only really comes-to-life when reciting some stories that are the only entertaining part of this book.
There is honestly nothing of value to be had for an experienced driver and Bens narration is irritating.

Good listen for driving lovers. loved it.
This is well worth a listen if you love driving and want to pick up some very handy tips. Some of the tips could save your life. It also gives you more knowledge on how and why your car behaves in situations and how to safely correct. Highly recommend.

difficult to imagine
I enjoyed it overall but some of the non driving and racing skills where difficult to imagine. Understanding the car and why it does what it does makes you appreciate the mechanism of the car. It does help with different driving conditions and the snow was useful as it is a rarety these days. I must admit the best book I read is Road craft from the Police in all good book shops.

Much wisdom and experience
Seems a bit dated now in many respects, particularly in an age of electric cars and autopilot, not to mention certain tells such as ‘driving like a lady’. The basics are all good, solid advice and mostly still currently applicable but i think an updated edition is due (with less of the Top Gear macho swagger and more about Teslas, average speed limits and ULEZ zones…)

Would make a great TV series
Although I learned a lot from this book on how to improve my driving, I couldn't help but think the format would be better suited to a TV series rather than an audio/physical book, as some elements are naturally hard to grasp without seeing what's going on! The behind the scenes stuff on his stunt driving fascinated me as a fan of that sort of thing, thought it suffered a bit from everything having to be described.
I'm glad I listened to it though as it has definitely made me consider my driving more, I just can't help think there's more that could be gained from it if it weren't just a book!
