Summary

Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. There is nothing more powerful than a mother's love.

Five years ago Molly Gabriel lost her twenty-year-old son, Joey, to a terrible sailing accident. His empty boat was washed ashore on the rocks, but his body was never found.

Now Molly has returned to the sands of Cornwall, haunted by his disappearance, unable to accept he is gone. Joey was an experienced sailor and died on a calm sea--things just don't add up, and Molly cannot let it go. Desperate for answers, she turns to Joey's best friend, Ben, to go back to what really happened that day...

Intensely emotional and relentlessly suspenseful, I Do Not Sleep is the latest best seller from broadcaster, journalist, and book club champion Judy Finnigan.

I did sleep!

I was looking forward to Judy Finnigan's next book after loving Eloise. Sadly I was very disappointed, the story was ridiculous and if she described another scene in her airy fairy way I will scream! The reader kept sending me to sleep, she had such a boring voice, but then it would be difficult to read such a silly story any other way. No interesting characters and Molly was so annoying.

A Really enjoyable listen

What made the experience of listening to I Do Not Sleep the most enjoyable?

I thought it was a gripping story that twisted and turned at every chapter. As I listened to this book whilst commuting to and from work, it made the usual traffic jams a pleasure to be in.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, however this was not possible.

Any additional comments?

I thought the book itself was well written. As a Mancunian who has been holidaying in Cornwall every year since childhood I really identified with parts of this book. I know the area it was set in very well and it made me want to drive straight to Polperro.

What a disappointment!

I was really looking forward to listening to this book. I had high expectations but was very disappointed. The narrator has a very whiny, irritating voice, the plot was weak and the descriptions of the locations, repetitive and over stated. The story was so slow and drawn out that I got half way through the book and had to give up on it.

Lovely heartwarming story

I am not usually into books like this. This book however rings so true. I understand the way the mind can lead us when we are bereaved.

Oh heck, what a waste of a credit!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

no sorry! I was expecting so much from this book and author, unfortunately neither delivered.
The story line was all over the place and so repetitive I ended up feeling very frustrated with it! I did listen to the end as I wanted to find out what happened to Ben...even that was a let down!!!

Would you be willing to try another book from Judy Finnigan? Why or why not?

Probably not... scarecrow ghost visions, fickle characters and long winded boring descriptions of Cornwall (and I love Cornwall by the way) made for tedious listening.

What didn’t you like about Patience Tomlinson’s performance?

the narrator struggled with the male voices, it felt very put on, almost like listening to a four year old child impersonating her Daddy's voice! when she was in female character she sounded very much like the Lady from 'Keeping up appearances' . Sorry but this is also a negative for me.

Do you think I Do Not Sleep needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

argh no!

Any additional comments?

sorry Judy, I so wanted to like this book :-(

How did this ever get published?

This is the worst excuse for a novel I have ever heard. Unsophisticated syntax, where every other sentence is a list or an overworked cliché, becomes frustrating very quickly. It is littered with badly - constructed simile and the whining narrative voice is infuriating. Poorly drawn characters are unsympathetic, with the central protagonist 'Mollie' churlish and two - dimensional. The story is rambling: There is a definite sense of the 'author'- if you would go so far as to award her that title - loving the sound of her own voice and not knowing when to give up, or better still shut up.

9 hours of my life I'm never getting back.

Clumsy and heavy handed, lacking subtlety and nuance. Parts reminded me of a year 8's attempt at suspense writing. Weak storyline and inadequate resolution to the 9 hours build-up of moaning.
