Editor reviews

Understanding our psychology is made easy with the fascinating audiobook Influence: Science and Practice, written by well-known author and Professor of Psychology Robert B. Cialdini and narrated by Lloyd James. In complete and unabridged 5th Edition, this book is an intriguing look at why people say ‘yes’ and what makes us vulnerable to other’s requests. Hear the six psychological categories that lead us to be persuaded. Written in prose, this book is easy to read with the information memorable. It is the perfect tool for training in sales and marketing roles. Available now from Audible.

Summary

Influence: Science and Practice is an examination of the psychology of compliance (i.e. uncovering which factors cause a person to say "yes" to another's request).

Written in a narrative style combined with scholarly research, Cialdini combines evidence from experimental work with the techniques and strategies he gathered while working as a salesperson, fundraiser, advertiser, and in other positions inside organizations that commonly use compliance tactics to get us to say "yes." Widely used in classes, as well as sold to people operating successfully in the business world, the eagerly awaited revision of Influence reminds the listener of the power of persuasion.

Cialdini organizes compliance techniques into six categories based on psychological principles that direct human behavior: reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity.

Interesting

An interesting listen but a little repetitive in parts. The recording was from a cd and the prompts to change the cd are still present. Also repeats itself on at least two occasions.

very interesting read

after reading this book you feel slightly invisible to all the deceptive mind games people play with you daily. I always thought I wasn't that bad anyway. but some of these examples were relevant to me. there was a lot of tips I can now use in my work and at home. the small favour followed by a bigger favour. or the limited availability trick. can see myself reading this book again to write everything down!

Long but very detailed

I found this book great for giving me a better understanding of the things that happen every day.

Having read his other book (written with others whose name I can't remember now) "Yes! The science of persuasion" ( I think it's called) I still enjoyed this and learnt a lot of additional information

Starts slow but EXCELLENT audio book

I really struggled for the first hour or so as many of the examples regarding sales, advertising and marketing are somewhat obvious these days. Really starts to hot up half way through and couldn't stop listening from that point on. Enjoyable and educational. Excellent book

Unbelievable book about such a wide variety of extensive research

All of the cases used in this book are fantastic. A really well thought out book that flows and does not get boring at any point.

For whatever purpose you chose to read this, it will benefit you and you will learn a lot. Plenty of the real life examples are very relevant to every day life and you can extract lots of useful knowledge from this great read.

Throughly recommend, excellent for business, also highly beneficial to sales in particular.

A fav writer teamed with a fav narrator

Professor Cialdini writes some of the best business psychology which I have recommended to many people in various countries. His work is justly translated into many languages, in some there are even multiple translations, such as Russian for instance.

Lloyd James is someone whose narration I have already enjoyed on several occasions and his delivery of every book carries conviction and comprehension so that it is easy to find oneself assuming that he it is read by the author himself.

I found this so in Fasting by Jentezen, and several other books in business and discipleship areas. I regard it to be a selling point for a book I am otherwise not sure if I should invest in if he is the narrator.

So when a favourite author actually teams up with a favourite narrator, then you have a no-brainer. Worth the credit and the time taken to listen through with care.
