Summary
One of the inspirations for the major motion picture Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley.
This is the true story of a 24-hour period on Everest when members of three separate expeditions were caught in a storm and faced a battle against hurricane-force winds, exposure, and the effects of altitude, which ended the worst single-season death toll in the peak's history.
In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead.
Krakauer's audiobook is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. The author's own anguish over what happened on the mountain is palpable as he leads his listeners to ponder timeless questions.

Real life adventure
Very interesting thought provoking a true story of goals and glory ,
Apart from a couple of editing errors ( you can't miss them , you can't miss them ) that's a clue, a sad but unavoidable story of the power of nature

Still shocking to listen to two decades later.
I remember this happening, it was all over the international news. Not just a first hand account of doomed climbers on Everest, but possibly a morality tale. The author's struggle with survivor's guilt and a telling Internet posting from a Nepalese orphan right, at the end of the book, throws a very different focus on to the "right" humanity to be on the mountain providing a new angle.
The original climbers to summit Everest were very experienced, but nowadays inexperienced people are "guided" up for vast sums of money, adding to the litter, pollution and corpses on this remote, savage and beautiful place. A very different ethic.
Beautifully written and well read.

Extremely Enjoyable book
This is the second book I have listened to about Everest, the first being about the 1953 first summit, so I already had knowledge of the various reference points which made it easier listening. Excellent for information about the disaster but also a great general read about the mountain and the problems that are faced. A cracking book that is as honest and it is saddening.

Actually a really good story
I was afraid it would be a bit of an overdramatization, but this was a super book! the author writes to the point, and the narrator does a splendid job. Really enjoyed and can recommend. The subject matter is heavy, but it doesn't take any effort to get gripped by it!

Great book, terrible accents
I found the book really gripping. Really enjoyed the pace and way the book switches between context, history of Everest, then to the main narrative. But the accents are just appalling and really unnecessary. Really offputting, it almost made me hang up.

Great Listen
Enjoyed listening to this courageous story. Can understand the draw of Everest but until you listen to a blow by blow account of the dangers these climbers face you can't imagine how harrowing it gets on the mountain.
