Summary

"The process of being conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others" - so M. Robert Mulholland Jr., defines spiritual formation. Compact and solid, this definition encompasses the dynamics of a vital Christian life and counters our culture's tendency to make spirituality a trivial matter or reduce it to a private affair between "me and Jesus".
In Invitation to a Journey, Mulholland helps Christians new and old to understand that we become like Christ gradually, not instantly. Not every personality is suited to an early morning quiet time, so Mulholland frees different personality types to express their piety differently. He reviews the classical spiritual disciplines and demonstrates the importance of undertaking our spiritual journey with (and for the sake of) others. This road map for spiritual formation is profoundly biblical and down to earth. In the finest tradition of spiritual literature, it is a vital help to Christians at any stage of their journey.

Filling in the Gaps of Hyper-Spirituality

This book identifies control as the root to spiritual apathy and develops the reader's person and soul holistically.

The chapters on maturing our shadow selves, controlling God for growth and living in light of the new Jerusalem while within fallen Babylon make the book.

I would recommend it if you are seeing limits to individual spiritual pursuits, desiring more of God in the everyday and hitting barriers to your own growth in who Jesus has called you to be.

GREAT content, may need visual aid for 1 chapter

This is a wonderful book for self discovery in Christ. I read it/listened to it for seminary. The performance was good, engaging, and spoken at a good pace. He is sure to pause between sections so transitions that are within chapters are easier to understand without the visual aid in front of you. A visual AID may be necessary for one of the beginning chapters, however. He tries to read off a table that categorizes personality traits with specific Myers Briggs Type Indicators (personality inventory). If I'm not making sense then you understand why a visual aid is necessary. However, the rest of the book is extremely helpful and teaches a lot about the importance of good balance in the different areas of our spiritual life. It also gives tips and plans to help work on these areas. As we all know, none of us is perfect and there is always room for more Christ and self improvement. God bless you in your journey.
