Summary

A desert-island adventure, and a subtle observation of friendship, trust and humanity.

Winner of The Children’s Book Award.

Superbly read by DEREK JACOBI.

When Michael is washed up on an island in the Pacific after falling from his parents’ yacht, he struggles to survive on his own. He can’t find food and he can’t find water, and as Michael and his dog curl up to sleep, he knows they cannot last long.

But he soon realises there is someone close by, someone who is watching over him and helping him to stay alive. Following a close-run battle between life and death, the mysterious stranger – Kensuke – allows Michael into his world and they become friends, teaching and learning from each other, until the day of separation becomes inevitable.

Enjoyable

Whilst I could probably listen to Derek Jacobi read the telephone directory and enjoy listening to it - the whole story is highly enjoyable. I always find that, whilst Michael Morpurgo writes for "children", they are highly enjoyable by adults too ( perhaps its the big kid in all of us?)

Masterpiece...

I was so impressed by this novel that I decided to use it as part of my English teaching programme. The narration is absolutely superb and had the children completely captivated each morning.

A touching story, read very well indeed.

This story come's alive in one's mind, the voice over is done so well, I love his English in 'Japanese accent'.
The music added a bit of flavor to it and all in all a really touching story, read very well indeed.

Can listen to over and over again. Love it.

To me this is a timeless classic I first read the book when I was at school and I love delving back in and hearing of Micheals adventure and the friendship with Kensuke shows that there is no age limit for those who care

Great story, well told. Our family (youngest 6) enjoyed this very much. It made our long journey to Scotland go well.
