Summary

'The rock cast a sharp, dark shadow over a shape huddled on the ground. Please don’t let it be the boy, Colomba thought. Her silent prayer didn't go unanswered. The corpse belonged to the mother.'

When a woman is beheaded in a park outside Rome and her six-year-old son goes missing, the police unit assigned to the case sees an easy solution: they arrest the woman's husband and await his confession. But the Chief of Rome's Major Crimes unit doubts things are so simple. Secretly, he lures to the case two of Italy's top analytical minds: Deputy Captain Colomba Caselli, a fierce, warrior-like detective still reeling from having survived a bloody catastrophe, and Dante Torre, a man who spent his childhood trapped inside a concrete silo. Fed through the gloved hand of a masked kidnapper who called himself 'The Father', Dante emerged from his ordeal with crippling claustrophobia but, also, with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and hyper-observant capacities.

All evidence suggests that 'The Father' is back and active after being dormant for decades. But when Colomba and Dante begin following the ever-more-bizarre trail of clues, they grasp that what's really going on is darker than they ever imagined.

Kill the Angel, the sequel to Kill the Father, publishes in May 2018.

This unabridged audio version is read by Cassandra Campbell.

Great

Classy thriller with lots to it - never bored me once and lots of unpredictable moments and events which kept it fresh. A fairly deep look at trauma in some ways as well, which is refreshing compared with books where people seem to suffer appallingly and bounce back with a few sleepless nights and a booze problem.

Interminable.

I thought this book was never going to end. I found the narrator’s characterisation of Columba to be insipid and I just couldn’t relate to her at all. The story had so much promise but it was so long and drawn out. I found myself looking for excuses not to listen when I’m usually engrossed from start to finish. My nonexistent knowledge of the Italian police force and legal system probably didn’t help. I won’t be listening to more from this author.

Needs a different narrator

This was a brilliant story and if I had read the book I would have loved it. But for me it was totally spoilt by the thick American accent that faltered to pronounce the Italian names and words. If it had been read by someone with a soft Italian accent it would have been amazing. I struggled to listen to it because everytime she said something Italian it sounded forced and jarring. And as there is an Italian name in almost every sentence it was hard going!!!

First rate Audible!

The story, the characters and the narration made this, for me, a five star listen and that is very rare. This was my first Sandrone Dazieri and I look forward to the next with great anticipation.

I was skeptical about the length

What made the experience of listening to Kill the Father the most enjoyable?

I loved the many twists. They didn't seem too much or too outlandish at all. Every time I thought the book might be drawing to a close, something else happened that opened another door.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kill the Father?

I spent a long time wondering what Colomba had seen in the picture at Dante's father's house. Then when it all came together I was satisfied.

What does Cassandra Campbell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I like the way she narrated Dante's voice. I also liked that her accent on pronouncing Italian names/places/things seemed accurate. I would have just read it phonetically, completely disregarding the fact that it's set in Italy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I saw the length and knew that was impossible.

Any additional comments?

I'm definitely intrigued for the next book. Who is this brother?

like the best TV series, unputdownable!

Kill the father has got so many twists and turns it was just like watching a great TV series. it has a lot of suspense, great characterisation and a plot that thickens without ever becoming cumbersome and the pace is just right.
I found the narrator excellent with a great range of voices, she really made the book. I had tried to read the physical book before but I much preferred listening to it than reading it. I would recommend this to anyone who likes thrillers.

great story

really enjoyed this book and cant wait for the next one. Narration not great, all italian characters but narrator had an american accent. i found this slightly irritating. love how the two main characters had their own internal personal battles but did not give up. very powerful messsages about self determination and fighting for the greater good
