Way too difficult for me

I've been learning Japanese for about 2 years and I hoped I'd be able to use this book to gradually recognise phrases. However the book actually requires a very high standard of Japanese. My teacher transcribed part of the text into hiragana for me and the sentences are incredibly long and convoluted. She spent about 45 minutes explaining just one sentence to me, removing parts until it became understandable. The author probably thought he was doing a good job when writing it in his native language, but it doesn't translate well into Japanese, at least not for me. The book seems quite fun and the reading is pleasing and clear; it's just a shame that the writing is so inaccessible. It's also a shame that Audible doesn't cater more for people who are learning languages, because good audio books would be very useful.
