Summary

The massacre at Tancred House seems at first to be the work of a burglar, panicked into killing. But Chief Inspector Wexford believes there are links with the murder of a Kingsmarkham detective some ten months earlier.

Awful narration

The voice is awful, completely monotone and makes it impossible to enjoy the story. I much preferred the narrators used for the other Ruth Rendell books.

Classic Wexford, beautifully narrated

Gently paced, with typically complex Rendell characters, this was really brought to life by Robin Bailey"s reading, so much more expressive than newer recordings, and even included the odd unedited throat clearing! It's great to have some of Rendell's books available in the Plus Catalogue, now to explore the rest of the Wexford series.

Good story and narrator

I liked this narrator. His voice suits phone speaker better than some of the more screeching voices. It was somewhat painful how long it took the detective to figure out who the killer was, as this seemed apparent early on, but a good story and characters nonetheless.

tedious beyond belief

The plot is, I'm sure, well up to Ruth Rendell's usual high standard.
However, Robin Bailey's unutterably dreary, monotone narration makes this impossible to listen to.

Kissing the Gunner’s Daughter

Story was ok, but didn’t like the abrupt ending or the pompous narrator! Had to listen to quite a bit more than once to work out who was who!

Narration made listening difficult

I really struggled with the narration, to the extent that I gave up with three hours to go.. he has such a plummy, drawling voice it is often hard to make out what he's saying and it becomes increasingly irritating. A great voice for the stage perhaps, but not to my taste at all for narration.

Tried and tried but couldn’t focus in

Unfortunately for me I just couldn’t get into the narrators voice

I knew how it would end right from the beginning, I guess because the intonation is the narration betrayed that it was either just wrong, or it was so obviously lies

I’m not articulating myself well but I just didn’t manage to engage with the book but I think it’s because of the narration. Maybe listen to a clip before you download just to see if it’s your thing

Missing the Gunner’s Daughter

Am new to Wexford and very much enjoying. Well drawn characters and beautiful detail, very visual and powerfully read by Bailey

Can’t really comment on the story

as I have given up too soon to appreciate it. The narrator has a miserable, dreary way of speaking, sounding bored and cynical, which I found really alienating. Would not recommend for this reason.
