Summary
Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system.
Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

Good story ruined by terrible narration - Fail.
This is the eighth book I have read in the HH series and it's the first one I have been really disappointed with. I don't have the time to listen to the entire series of 50 or so books so I am trying to cherry pick the most relevant in terms of content, story and building the plot. The order so far has been:
Horus Rising
False Gods
Galaxy in Flames
The Flight of The Eisenstein
Garro
Mechanicum
Nemesis
and now I am attempting to listen to Know No Fear - It is not easy!
I have been so impressed with Dan Abnett's writing in particular, closely followed by Swallow and McNeill and I was looking forward to Mr Abnett enlightening me as to the machinations of the 13th and 17th Legions. This book is deliberately written in a more clipped and succinct tone as if more of a military report than a story and it would work well apart from one very major drawback - the narration.
It is extremely difficult and frustrating to listen to. The voices are an absolute joke and it feels like a cross between a Black Adder and Terry Pratchett audio book. Don't get me wrong I could listen to these all day long if I'm in a Black Adder or Pratchett mood but lighthearted farcical comedy voices invoking the spirit of west country farmers is so out of place here it utterly destroys the entire pace and mood of the book. There are numerous occasions when new characters are introduced and the gravitas of the voices paint a picture of young teenage guardsmen or even civilian clerks but then you discover that you are supposed to be listening to senior Astartes - it just fails at every turn.
I am two hours into this book and I can't listen to it any more. Will be refunding this and moving on to better things. Will also avoid any books narrated by Gareth Armstrong - where's Toby Longworth when you need him?

Sadly disappointing
Read the book and it is one of my favourites in the HH series so was very disappointed with the audio version.
This is down purely to the narration. It's like the narrator wants to get through the story as quickly as possible and leave. The speed of delivery is far to fast and gives the listener no time to absorb the information . To make it worse the narrator delivers the story in a fast paced monotone droning manner with virtually nothing to differentiate aurally between characters.
If you want to listen to a book and be immersed then Mr Keeble is the benchmark in audio delivery, sadly the narrator of this falls far far short

Absolutely superb
So I’ve done a lot of miles over the past week and having this to listen to in the car has been awesome. It’s a truly epic rendition of a fantastic story and I have been left thoroughly pleased with it all. Great stuff.

One not to skip....
Another excellent Heresy book. Catapults the "Boys in Blue" into the civil war and sets up three branching stories that I hope see resolution in later novels.

Absolutely Fantastic!
I can’t say that I had much respect for the Ultramarines, thinking that their legion lacked depth and character development, but this audiobook has changed my mind completely!

Great book
Fascinating story, a great look at the Ultramarines and how their long standing rivalry with the Word Bearers gained such traction. Interesting to see Gulliman in such a truly perilous situation and how he operates to remedy it.

One of the best in the series
Excellent pace, a great story with some fantastic characters. And I’m not just saying that because I’m an ultramarines player!
