Love Paul Noble

Would you consider the audio edition of Destination Spanish with Paul Noble to be better than the print version?

Yes, of course, it's a language course... you cannot learn Spanish by reading - the pronunciation is so different from English.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

There is nothing to change on this audio - except maybe to hint at what the next course would cover but maybe he didn't know when he did this one.

Which character – as performed by Paul Noble – was your favourite?

Paul Noble plays himself ... AND he's my favourite character!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It lifted a weight off my shoulders. I have never held much hope of understanding Spanish... there is light at the end of the tunnel now.

Any additional comments?

I like the way he does not always point out things he wants you to note straight away. He lets the native speaker, Carmen, say the phrase a couple of times - like "tortilla" before he says "notice how it is pronounced"... "consider how it is spelt".

He teaches you some phrases, repeating them relentlessly, but if you are listening on the move or while moving around the house, this is fine. You negotiate a tricky junction, or your mind wanders off, you go back to listening and you haven't missed too much.

He says he WANTS you to forget, that this is part of the process. This is reassuring if you've just heard the same phrase five times in different guises and then manage to forget it again. I imagine it's like a wave rolls back out to sea but the tide comes in.

He speaks well known words like "con" from "chilli con carne" as if you were learning something really important but meanwhile you've learnt to say: "I have been to Madrid, but I have not been to Barcelona, have you not been to Madrid?" Then he goes back and teaches you "coffee", "please". It's like learning by stealth. He takes you back and forward like the sea playing with debris or a symphony with a repeating refrain but lots of other music in between.

Excellent for a novice like myself.

Where does Destination Spanish with Paul Noble rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a good way to learn how to get by in the language without feeling stuck to specific phrases. I feel more confident and am looking forward to doing the rest of this course. My daughter has done his French version and has found it really good. It gets away from the more traditional way of learning with grammar and focuses more on being able to say and understand key parts of a dialogue.

What about Paul Noble’s performance did you like?

There is a good mix of Paul telling you what you need to do and a native speaker saying the words or phrases in Spanish.

Any additional comments?

Audible needs to have some more appropriate questions for books like this.
