Publisher's Summary

Are you bored with the traditional methods people tell you to use to learn French? Are you bored with all those dusty grammar books that make everything look so hard? What if we told you there's a better, more enjoyable way to learn French and grow your vocabulary exponentially? Well, guess what? There is! The best way to learn French is by listening to short stories. The problem? You might feel like you don't know where to start. And that's exactly why we created this book. We know how difficult it may seem to learn a foreign language from scratch, let alone trying to put all that learning into practice. But what you might not realize is that it's fairly easy to fully incorporate the essentials of a language once you frame that learning into a certain context (for example, a short story). Short stories allow you to put what you've learned so far into practice, allowing you to expand your vocabulary quickly, make sense of ideas, understand new concepts, and overall get a better grasp of the French language. Short stories work because they eliminate the stress of forcing yourself to learn. Instead, when you listen to the captivating short stories we've prepared for you, you will learn French without even realizing you're learning it! Your goal is to simply focus on a single story at a time. The stories comprise multiple genres, including adventure, fantasy, mystery, romance, just to name a few. We wanted these stories to be fun, interesting, and appealing, motivating you to keep on listening to find out what happens next. That's the very best way to learn, don't you think?

Would you try another book written by The Language Academy or narrated by Erik Bjork and Susana Larraz ?

Absolutely not.

Has French Short Stories for Beginners put you off other books in this genre?

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Erik Bjork and Susana Larraz ?

I have no idea, but I would have done better without the long and boring explanation. also, the narrators had zero emotion and practically no intonation. I was simply bored and put off. Being a linguist who also teaches languages, I am quite familiar with methodology, and this approach is widely used, but used incorrectly and poorly. Quite disappointing.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

This book is utterly useless and boring. Go for the natural method and save your money. Listen to real French.

Any additional comments?

Is it really necessary to go on for such a long time trying to explain why the presentation is what it is? As a linguist, I was quite annoyed by the presentation. It seemed more like this was a sales pitch than an explanation. after awhile, it became so redundant that I got so bored I did not even want to get to the stories.By the time we FINALLY got to the stories, they were told in such a boring and listless manner that I simply could not go on. Again... Listen to real French. The translation method is also old hat... There are too many other engaging approaches to learning language today... Sticking to translation is absurd. The introduction also says to compare English and French and study their similarities. Really? English is a GERMANIC language, and while there is some vocabulary which is similar, this is the encouragement of accidentally learning FALSE FRIENDS and also trying to compare conjugations with that of English, which are NOT the same. The structure of English is NOT the same as the structure of French - it is not even close. This statement is misleading and will lead to many issues and an inability to advance properly. If this book were presented with a methodology like ESA or the communicative approach, it would have been more on point. DO NOT make the mistake of comparing two languages with such huge structural differences. In fact, do not make the mistake of comparing ANY language to English when learning a second or even third language.
