What would have made Learn Chinese - Ultimate Getting Started with Chinese Box Set, Lessons 1-55 better?
Scrap them and start again with an emphasis on actually teaching Chinese would be a start.
What was most disappointing about Innovative Language Learning’s story?
As someone who is attempting to absorb a new language i quickly found that i began to resent the persistent meanderings in the content away from the teaching of Chinese. I would not recommend this set to anyone starting out and there is far to little content for it to be useful to anyone with more experience of the language.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Voice talent was fine, content was lacking.
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
This is very poor. It more like fly on the wall experiance of a couple chatting. I didn't learn very much at all and i have to agree with the other post that it's not for listening too whilst driving etc. At the really annoying accent of the Amber is the icing on the cake for the 2 star review.
Sorry, but I can't recommend this to a beginner trying to learn Chinese. On the positive side, the two teachers (one American, one Chinese) are fun to listen to when they're chatting about Chinese culture. But the language instruction, which is only 20% or so of the tapes, is pretty poor. It's not something you can listen to in the car, because the instructors don't lead you through a learning process. They just say the words once or twice, and that's it. If you're just starting out and looking for something to listen to in the car, jogging or whatever, check out YoYo Chinese instead.

very long and a lot of good content. lots of language for practical situations. starts with very basics in beginning chapters, but as usual you still need to start with some real life basic chinese class to better understand it all. maybe the start is too boring for more advanced, but all is still good for ongoing language practice/ review. sometimes the chinese spoke too fast or speech was not clear though, btw thats just like real life. its mainland, shanghai chinese so not same usage as everywhere else.
