Lessons 1-8, the Beginner course: This course makes no assumption of knowledge of any language other than English and gives the beginner practical and functional use of the spoken language. It is also appropriate for anyone who has studied Portuguese before, but has forgotten much of it or does not have confidence in speaking. The Beginner course is designed to take you from complete beginner to intermediate level.
Lessons 9-12, the Intermediate course: This course is for those with an intermediate-level foundation in Portuguese, or those who have completed lessons 1-8 and want to take their learning to an advanced level and speak Portuguese proficiently and easily.
How does it work? Unlike most language courses that focus around topics or grammar forms, the Michel Thomas Method works by breaking a language down into its component parts, enabling you to reconstruct the language yourself - to form your own sentences, to say what you want, when you want. Within the first 10 minutes of the course, you will be generating complete sentences on your own. It is important that you complete the lessons in order.
The Method is successful because it builds on the language you learn in each lesson and "recycles" language taught in earlier lessons, allowing you to build ever-more complicated sentences. Because the Method is based on understanding, not memorisation, there is no set limit to the length of time that you should study each lesson. Once you feel you have a good grasp of the language taught in one lesson, you can move on to the next.
In lesson 6 of the Portuguese Beginner course, you'll learn more about giving commands and expressions of quantity with the following:
Verb forms for the -zer verbs fazer (to do/make), etc.
Commands: -nho and -zer verbs; forms for tu (you)
Verbs começar (to start), pensar (to think, plan), encontrar (to find), ficar (to be located, to stay), levantar (to lift)
Useful words contigo (with you), lento (slowly), encontro (meeting), quanto tempo (how long), quantos/as (how many), uns/umas (some)
Reflexive verb levantarse (to get [oneself] up)
Masculine nouns ending in -aIn
The next lesson you'll learn to talk about the future and the past.

Excellent way to learn Portuguese
Would you listen to Michel Thomas Beginner Portuguese, Lesson 6 again? Why?
The Michel Thomas method is a great method to learn the language. Within the first few minutes of lesson 1 you have gained a large vocabulary. I liked listening to the other learners on the recording as it was reassuring to know that they seemed to have to think as hard as I did when constructing a sentence! But it also improves your listening skills and one was able to identify when the learners made mistakes (which the 'teacher' helped to correct). There was a native speaker on the recording too so you could hear what the language sounded like when spoken by a Portuguese person.
What other book might you compare Michel Thomas Beginner Portuguese, Lesson 6 to, and why?
This is no6 in a series of 8- so obviously best to start at lesson 1.
What about Virginia Catmur’s performance did you like?
