Effective

Would you consider the audio edition of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Spanish, Vocabulary to be better than the print version?

They work well together - to learn through hearing and seeing - but the audio is much more relaxing and can be listened to with headphones anywhere

Don't do it

Terrible. It is listening to a dictionary being read. Get the Learning Spanish in Your Car series instead - it at least keeps you awake.
