Summary
A stunning new emotional tour-de-force from the author of Shadow, Born to Run and War Horse.
May, 1915. Alfie and his fisherman father find a girl on an uninhabited island in the Scillies - injured, thirsty, lost… and with absolutely no memory of who she is, or how she came to be there. She can say only one word: Lucy. Where has she come from? Is she a mermaid, the victim of a German U-boat, or even - as some islanders suggest - a German spy…? Only one thing is for sure: she loves music and moonlight, and it is when she listens to the gramophone that the glimmers of the girl she once was begin to appear.
WW1 is raging, suspicion and fear are growing, and Alfie and Lucy are ever more under threat. But as we begin to see the story of Merry, a girl boarding a great ship for a perilous journey across the ocean, another melody enters the great symphony - and the music begins to resolve…A beautiful tour de force of family, love, war and forgiveness, this is a major new novel from the author of Private Peaceful - in which what was once lost may sometimes be found, washed up again on the shore.

It may have been written for children but this 65 year old loved it. Sweet story with sad parts and always compelling.

Amazing Story
Listen to the Moon is a war story with a difference, set in 1915 it focuses on an injured girl found on an uninhabited island in the Scillies. Not knowing who she is, or where she has come from, the father and son who find her take her home with them.
It is an amazing story about community, courage , and of love, as they try to unravel the story of 'Lucy Lost' is she a German? A mermaid? And why can't she speak?
This is a story to warm your heart.

over long
I love this author and the story line was fascinating however I felt that the book was unbalanced with huge amounts of descriptive text was drawn out and over long particularly in relation to Lucy / Mary's treatment by the islanders in general and the school teacher in particular. By contrast, the twist / revelation at the end of the story had been so long in coming and I was hoping for a much greater impactful delivery that when in fact we reached that point it was all explained and done and dusted in a very prompt and unsatisfactory manner without sufficient time to savour the conclusion.

One of the best books I’ve read in 40 years
This is an amazing book. I literally couldn’t put it down. The fact that it’s true is amazing. It made me smile and it made me cry. It made me remember that there are some very very good people in this world.
This is a must read for all ages.

Listen to the moon
This story was a sad and emotional story but the truth. As many of Micheal’s books about war.
This story is excellent the voices from audio show which character is which easily.I recommend this book to anyone who is mature enough to take in the concept of it.
