Summary

From New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, Leylah Attar, comes a compelling, emotionally resonant new novel, set against the lush backdrop of the Serengeti.

Once in Africa, I kissed a king....

"And just like that, in an old red barn at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, I discovered the elusive magic I had only ever glimpsed between the pages of great love stories. It fluttered around me like a newborn butterfly and settled in a corner of my heart. I held my breath, afraid to exhale for fear it would slip out, never to be found again."

When a bomb explodes in a mall in East Africa, its aftershocks send two strangers on a collision course that neither one sees coming.

Jack Warden, a divorced coffee farmer in Tanzania, loses his only daughter. An ocean away, in the English countryside, Rodel Emerson loses her only sibling.

Two ordinary people, bound by a tragic afternoon, set out to achieve the extraordinary, as they make three stops to rescue three children across the vast plains of the Serengeti - children who are worth more dead than alive.

But even if they beat the odds, another challenge looms at the end of the line. Can they survive yet another loss - this time of a love that's bound to slip through their fingers, like the mists that dissipate in the light of the sun?

"Sometimes you come across a rainbow story-one that spans your heart. You might not be able to grasp it or hold on to it, but you can never be sorry for the color and magic it brought."

Mists of the Serengeti is inspired by true events and contains emotional triggers, including the death of a child.

touching, wonderful story

I have read this story first and felt in love with author's writing style. I have often returned to favourite parts of the book.

When I heard Zachary Webber was the narrator, I had no doubts I need it as audiobook too. Pity there was no warning he had minimal input: just the beginning and the end. Co-narrator is OK. Her British accent feels forced and rather irritating. Zachary is so wonderful with accents but he was absent from this book. Disappointing.

Slow but beautiful

The story was way too slow moving for my taste but it still did tug at my heartstrings every now and again. Very beautifully written and I have no doubt this is a ‘it’s me not the book’-thing. And may I just say.. the epilogue!
I don’t usually cry while listening to books but that epilogue, mainly the last part had me bawling my eyes out! It will break your heart but at the same time you will be happy that that was the way it happend 💔

Nice love story

I liked the story although some of the descriptive language regarding their emotions I found a bit excessive. Also, I've listened to both narrators before and enjoyed those books (in their American accents) but unfortunately most of the story is told using a British accent and it sounded quite robotic and this is why I have rated the book a bit lower than I would have.

Enjoyable - would recommend

Was recommended this author from a friend. I enjoyed the wonderful range of emotions the storytelling took me through, and it was very easy to feel in the moment in the scenes and scenarios. Some of the characters were very 'Hollywood' in their description and the plot/story arch panned out fairly predictably.

My only gripe was that I didn't much enjoying the narrators - the accents were a bit all over the place and they didn't seem to be able to add tempo or nuances in the right places. And how they pronounced some words sounded like computer-generated pronunciations; a bit robotic and therefore spoiling the sentence as you had to replay it to make sure you heard it correctly.

But I did enjoy it and would probably buy the book version so I can read it in my own voice to fully appreciate it.
