Summary
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so. The latest trainee detective to work with him is the son of a member of his former team, and together they begin to unravel the truth about what happened to Wayne Fletcher. As the investigation proceeds, it becomes clear that others are involved - some seem determined to prevent it, some seem to be taking too much interest. In the end, Smith operates alone, having stepped too far outside standard procedures to ask for support. He knows that his own life might be at risk but he has not calculated on the life of his young assistant also being put in danger.

Excellent
New author to me, excellent, sort of different from the usual detective novels, I really enjoyed it. Likeable main character, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys British detective novels. Well narrated.

Love the characters!
Great dialogue and characters, which is somewhat unusual in police procedural. Very good, I’m excited to read the rest of the series

Good plot line, believable characters.
I write this review having listened to 5 DC books on the trot. I have enjoyed them all. DC is, as a character and a detective, old fashioned and plodding, but somehow the storyline is neither sedate nor dated. The Author builds a strong narrative with a clear direction using likeable and believable characters with relationships that add to, and don’t subvert, the plot. These stories can be enjoyed with little need to suspend one’s disbelief. But their resolution is not necessarily predictable. I find this refreshing in a literary world that seems to push ever more fantastic plots, over flawed super heroes and complicated relationships.
The reading is generally good. I, personally, prefer readers who read the story rather than impose their personal Thespian interpretations on the narrative. I know that there are many listeners who like to be emotionally transported by dramatic reading, I don’t; and Jackson doesn’t overdo the accents. He does have some quirky pronunciations and occasionally he assumes the way acronyms are said rather than researching their common usage. But who’s perfect?

Truly excellent!
DC is a very well drawn character, as well as a delightful one. The reading complements this characterisation and is itself a work of art. Can’t fault any of it!

I loved this detective!
I really enjoyed this book. It ticks all the boxes of a classic whodunnit. Refreshingly without swearing or gore! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
