Summary

Sid Halley had one good hand and another made of metal. Five hundred pounds of horse had landed on him, directly ending his career as a brilliant jockey - and indirectly ending his marriage to the woman he loved.

He had become a private investigator, quite a good one, though his new life could never erase the haunting memories of his past glories. But it was only when the wife of one of England's top trainers came to beg his help in preventing some foul play at the track that Sid Halley began to know what being haunted really was.

enjoyable

Would you consider the audio edition of Whip Hand to be better than the print version?

No I have a vivid imagination I frequently find my internal "movie" as it were is better than the audio version.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Whip Hand?

There really is not just one it is a really good story and has several vivid moments

Have you listened to any of Tony Britton’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I enjoy his performances it is a shame he wasn`t around for felix francis works. this audio isn't the best quality but i do not think it is the performance it may be my download quality.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Oh yes definitely.

A good read ( or listen)

I remember this reading from years ago borrowing a library copy. Still very enjoyable. Tony Britton does justice to the story and I didn’t notice some of the things criticised in other reviews or if I did they didn’t spoil my enjoyment in any way.

As always, the story grips the listener......

The story was very well told by Tony Britten, each character totally believeable. My only gripe is that Sid’s name Halley is pronounced wrongly for me. In the UK it is pronounced ‘Hal lee’ not Hall lee. I have listened to audio books before and it has been the former pronunciation. Each time it was mispronounced (in my view) it detracted from the flow. Equally, in other books Dick Francis or latterly Felix Francis would never have written ‘cell’ instead of ‘mobile’ for a personal phone.

Haw ley or Ha lley

this is the second of the series and why Tony Britton changed his pronunciation of Sid's surname amazes me. why Hawley it's Halley. the joke in book one odds against is Sid's nickname being halitosis.. not Hawleytosis

Great acting, gripping story.

Narrator nailed it. We know the author nails it because he's Dick Francis and this is one of his best!

Intense and gripping traditional narrative

Wonderful likeable ex jockey turned sleuth narrator finding his way through a web of intrigue and deceit. Engaging, realistic, unturnoffable.
