Summary

In Night Trains, Andrew Martin attempts to relive the golden age of the great European sleeper trains by using their modern-day equivalents. This is no simple matter.

The night trains have fallen on hard times, and the services are disappearing. Whether the backdrop is three a.m. at a Turkish customs post, the sun rising over the Riviera or the constant twilight of a Norwegian summer night, Martin rediscovers the pleasures of a continent connected by rail. By tracing the history of the sleeper trains, he reveals much of the recent history of Europe.

Against this tumultuous backdrop, he experiences his own smaller dramas as he ponders the mystery of the compartment dog and becomes embroiled in his very own night train whodunit.

Wonderful

Everything I hoped for and more. A delight that I would recommend to anyone. Charming, nostalgic, witty and brilliantly observed.

taken on a great journey

I enjoyed this book in hard copy and even more on audible, his steady tone was almost poetic.

Tone

Well researched and of great interest, however the narrator is far too monotone. Sounds like it’s being read from an autocue.

Very different and interesting

This was so different. not just the usual ‘people I met when I was travelling’ sort of book, but masses of interesting thoughts sparked from the actual journey as well as things that happened along the way. A real treat.

Outstanding

Just a wonderful journey in every sense. Andrew Martin is akin to (Sir) David Attenborough in his ability to engage and delight not only in his prose but also in his intimate delivery.
